as promised, some more details of my cedric build.
I bought it from my mate Ray, he was in oz for a few years before moving back to NZ. He posted a few photos of his 69 super six with rb30det turbo a few years ago (about 2008)

I got it late 2011 and this was it before i started anything. It had the big spring chop at the front and leaf flip at the rear thanks to Ray. 2.3L 3 speed column change, 6 seater

Next to my housemates late 60's merc

I was considering these wheels but they turned out to be too small to fit over the brakes

fixed the rear leafs

even got the mrs on the job
[ img ]

Out with the old

Crossmember strong enough for a truck!

Stripping it out.

Got this from sss engine importers

took 2 days to rip out the essentials

Chassis rails a bit narrow????

The sump sits on the crossmember

So off it came.
This handy lump of wood should be about the size of a new sump

Now its too wide.....

You can see the exhaust studs in this photo, there is only a few inches between the ports and the guard

So out it came!

Engine mounts version 1. A combination of the standard v8 rubber mounts and some wood

Roughly where i want it but a bit too far forward

Original gearbox crossmember bolted straight up to the gearbox! I had to move the crossmember back about 70mm, but it was easy as the chassis rails are straight and hollow.

The rubber on the original mount was shot so i modified it to suit the v8 auto mount.
I had to narrow it by 2 cut off discs

The gearbox is massive so i had to make that fit also

Engine mounts version 2 consist of some mitsi diesel ute mounts, but the angles were not quite right

Spacer for the mount to raise the engine and get the rubber on the right angle, and push the engine back a little more

Next job, exhaust.
There was very little room for the exhausts, It took a long time to get started but once i was on a roll iwas away. the rusty pipes were caused by me only working on the car 2 days out of every 8 when i was on shift

Easy way to cut all the pipes to length! The saw did not like it tho

I had a bit of trouble with the front suspension.
The 130 and early 230 cedrics have a smaller taper on the lower ball joint and they are no longer available. I got the last right hand side joint left in australia from nissan and there are no left side ones left.
After a lot of research and trips to various wreckers i decided to run the later model ball joint which is identical except for the taper on the stud.

from right to left,
130 left axle, 230 left axle, d21 navara right axle

The d21 axle fits the later ball joint so its straight on! But the d21 is 6 stud. A bit of research on the us minitrucking forums shows they often convert to hilux hubs to get 5 stud so i grabbed a set of them from the wreckers.
You can see the retaining nut is not all the way on. I got 6mm machines off the bearing collar on the axles and now they fit perfectly

The 4 pot gtr skyline calipers i have spare also bolt up nice

I was going to run the d21 axles reversed so the steering arms were on the rear of the axle, but this means the caliper hits the subframe before i get to full steering lock. I am now running the axles on the correct side and a mate is cnc'ing me a set of steering arms to suit

The hilux discs that came with the hubs are 257mm diameter. I changed my mind on caliper and am now running the 2 pot calipers that came with the v8. This means i need a 280mmx28m disc. The nissan x-trail front disc is a perfect fit after the centre is machined out to 83mm to fit over the rear of the hilux hub

Its a bit rugged but will work well and im happy with it

I need 16 inch wheels to clear the calipers, but after a bit of trial and error and i have decided to run 15 inch steelies from a falcon!

The steering box that all cedrics have would have left me no chance of fitting the vh, so it went in the bin ages ago
I decided to copy the RRS style steering rack conversion, there is a bit of information out there by some americans that have done diy steering rack conversions on their old firebird things.

I got the rack from a local wrecker as the RRS setups cost at least a grand

It came from this high performance beast!

There is a power version of the same rack but it is too wide, i think the wheels will hit it at full lock. Plus, i dont think i will be able to fit a pump and all the other crap you need.
I got a power steering unit from a holden barina or something and had a go at fitting that

I am using a combination of the original column and the barina column
[ img ]

Once i get the seat back in i will be able to chop the column to the correct length
The power unit is mounted to the stock pedal box that i have reinforced

The steering shaft is a bit tight against the chassis rail, but i have a hammer that knows the answer to that problem

My next mod is engine mounts version 3. I have decided how to do it with less engine movement for very little cost.
Hopefully this coming weekend i will be driving to brisbane to pick up my parts car i just bought and that will give me a bit more motorvation to do some more work on the car

Hey man well done so far, your skills leave me with no doubt we will see this cruiser/bruiser out and about very soon..

I tried to fit a 302 windsor into a 330, didnt work, not sayin it couldnt be done, just that i couldnt do it!!

thanks for the comments guys.
I wanted to fit a 6.2L commy motor and 6 speed as they are easy to tune up, just throw a cam, headers, air box, and a tune at it and your cooking. Also they are physically much smaller (narrower) than the VH motor, but they are way too expensive.

I hope to pick up the pace over the next few months and get it finished by feb next year. I have a parts car to pick up and that should increase my motivation levels sufficiently to get cracking again.

Tomorrow i think i will rip the diff out as its shagged and get a measurement. I think i have the 3.9 ratio diff and i want to run a 3.5 or 3.6. it will be a borg warner falcon or commy diff, or maybe r31, and possibly an lsd?
