Hi all

I am new here but a long time fan of datto, I have owned in the past a 180b sss, 200b wagon, 72 240k 2dr and a stanza.

I was looking for a early model 240k 2dr again and came across my 240z.

It is stock and in need of alot of work but it is gonna be a great car when finished....

I am in 2 minds about what to do with it.

1. a road rally car.... ie striped rollcage LS1 injected 350 etc

2. a glamour car.... ie rb25det plush interior etc

any comments are welcome....

maybe I will find another one and do both....

nice buy, i love a good project (when someone else does the work)
in my opinion, option 1 with engine out of option 2
a spastic RB25 is always going to be better then some chev crap 8)
that said, Khoudar Elhaouli's LS1 S13 sounds pretty good, goes well too
but yeah, RB25 FTW
(in my opinion)

it is gonna be a while until i get it going because i am on limited funds but a good plan is the only way to go.

I have been finding info on conversions and parts matchups etc.

my only concern is that what ever i choose to do to it, it will have to pass engineering in WA as that is were i am originally from and plan to move back to.

so no turbo/supercharged v8's etc only injected.

so a reb25det will probably be one of the better choices unless anyone has a better idea for engine conversions

If it has matching numbers, it will be far more valuable if restored to stock.
If not matching the world is your oyster.
The Z has a long but fairly narrow engine bay.
V engines will fit but just be aware, they get very snug.
Personally, I would suggest a straight 6 but get the latest technology if you can.
Bottom line: - It is your car, do what you want with it :D
My '73 came with an L28 EFI engine retrofitted with twin SU carbs.
Went really well
This is what I'm fitting now, an RB25DE with V.V.T. and 5 speed manual from an R33 Skyline

If you want stupid power, go a 1J, for torque, go a 1UZ, for an "easy" reliable 300hp converision, go a RB25DET, for a light car go an SR20. Or just drop a 460 cleveland in, live rear axle conversion, blower and hit the drags :D

For a lot of road rallys you will not be able to run an LS1 or an RB25 as you must run the standard engine block. Just thought I'd warn you as you don't want to spend a lot of time and money on a conversion and then not be able to use it for what you intended.

Good luck with the project :)

Find another and do both :P

But not an LS1? 460's are as old as they come... Go an LS1 for an all alloy V8 with heaps of after market goodies, and spare parts aplenty.

dattos aren't MEANT to be nice - they're meant to hardcore - occasional road use only, semi rally / racing cars with stripped interiors, full cages and a pair of webers.

Sorry but

Can't you find a 260z 2+2 to butcher and sell the 240z to someone who will restore her to original.

Not enough 240z's in Perth.

When you say "limited funds" is that a temporary or ongoing proposition?

A further option would be, sticking with the L6 block - this way the mods are relatively cheap, and don't necessarily need to be done in an "all or nothing* manner.

Eg you can

1) do an EFI conversion on your L6 (or switch to an L28E)

2) then go to programmable engine management

3) then go to forced induction (eg using L28E manifold or similar)

4) Then upgrade internals/change compression, injectors etc and

5) up the boost.

Perhaps 3) and 4) above could be switched depending on the condition of the motor.

But you could have a reasonably tough motor without spending loads and loads of time and money. And the added benefit of not making irreversible changes to a relatively rare car.

This is the approach i'm going to take (although not sure whether forced induction or modded NA 2.8).

my 2.04c (inflation's a b==tch.)
