Yep, massive tree stump, excavator had to dig all around it to get it out. The only positive was that we had a hole big enough to throw in a few of the rocks that we'd dug up. I'm going to have to attack it with a pick and get all the mud off, then try to cut it up. Either way it won't be fun.

Driveway will be concrete from footpath to garage, going for plain concrete with a dark grey tint thrown in the mix to match the shed and the house roof. Then I'll get some nice big diamond shaped lines cut into it to break it up a bit. I would love something nicer, like exposed aggregate or maybe a pattern/stamped effect, but like you said it's not going to be cheap as it is. My neighbour is a concreter and will be looking after me, hopefully just pay for materials and day labour. It'll be worth it when it's all done, well that's what I keep telling myself!

I have a similar stump at my place I need to do something with, but I'll probably be dumb enough to try and cut it out by hand as it's right where my slab for my shed will need to go eventually.

You will have fun cutting that thing up with a chain saw.....

Never tried to burn something that big before, but I would assume it would go for quite some time.
You would have to try and split it (using wedges) to try and expose more area.
Make an event out of it and start in the morning. With the coals, I'd ask one of your mates if they have a camp oven, and do a roast or something!

On the tree stump.....

Why not just winch it onto a trailer and dump it at the local tip

id avoid trying to burn it, ive burnt a few big gum tree stumps and they go for ages and need lots of other fuel (wood) to keep it burning hot otherwise you end up with a big smoke machine that doesnt dissapear! mine burnt for 2-3 days. if a chainsaw touches dirt, it'll blunten very quickly. I'd take it to the tip

dont sheds eat money! looking good though

thanks guys! I was there at the nats when you debuted it, aaron!

here's a proper explanation of the storm water routing, plus an update at the end...

The whole house and shed uses brand new PVC piping, no more old and cracked ceramic pipes.

[ img ]
Starting at the back of the shed, the gutter has a downpipe at each end, so we joined one side up with the other. It doesn't look like there's fall here, but there is.

[ img ]
From there, it wraps around the side of the shed and hugs the wall, popping out at the front, where it then drops into the ground to what is the very start of the trench.

[ img ]
In the above photo I'm now standing on the edge of the shed slab, looking forwards. You can see the first of two drain t-pieces we installed (the vertical pipe will be cut down to suit the concrete level). Looking further forward, you can see all the new piping for various downpipes, and one that runs under the decking.

[ img ]
Now I'm standing in front of the gate, looking at the front yard, where the piping ends. The pipe that tees in from the right hand side is actually connected to a downpipe outside our bedroom window, which was never connected to anything, it would just run off to the ground. It's good to know that everything will the connected properly now.

So all that's left is two things:
- Do a final check on pipe levels and fall, just to make sure it's as good as it can possibly be with the little amount of grade we have.
- Possibly reduce the diameter of the pipe from 100mm to 90mm where it meets the old pipe under the footpath, so it can actually be sleeved inside it. At the moment it's just butted up against it.

- - - - - - -

As of this weekend...

Levels checked, checked again, and re-checked. Pipe under footpath reduced to 90mm and shoved in about 1m deep, then the connection was slathered in motar. All pipes are now buried under 3 cubic meters of 7mm screening, all done by hand :(

Everything is still a mess but we're making progress. The best part is...

...it works!

I like this thread immensely. I can't wait to have a property large enough to face these problems.
