hey all im a newb to these forums and i am looking for a 1600 to play around with. i want to use this datto for hill climbs and classic car rallys but want to keep it with a stock motor.

after doing some searches i found a whole heap of datto's with L16 motors and L18 motors.

did they come standard out of the factory or did people put in L18's afterward. i know L20's never came in a 1600.

i am confused because i was looking at the targa tasmania results for 2003 and saw a 1969 510 1800 in a Limited modified class meaning that the engine block is stock but the intake and alot of other things are not ie brakes, suspension, cams etc etc.....

so if anyone knows where or knows themselevs what typs of 1600 came out of the Datsun factory it would help a lot!!

cheers

Cars, especially in the 70's and 80's might not have been relased with a motor or gearbox, or brakes but may have been homologated with a particular part for competion use.

For example, the a10 (stanza) was homologated with a z16, L16 and L20 block, meaning you could use any one of the blocks for competion use, depending on what class you wanted to win. However they were only ever relased with an L16 in Oz as far as I know.

180's in the US came with L20's but we only ever got them with L16's

I am sure I saw a book once at a library that had a p510 with a l20 block in it that was released in the middle east somewhere, but I have been assured that this was not the case. I dont know when the first L20 was made, so this could be a fauly book, or bad memory. (most likely the later)

So what you see in motorsport may not have been releaesd to the public but I think the p510 was released with an L18 for local relasee as well as for homologation use.

1600's as we know them in australia are known by the chassis number '510'.
P510's are 1600's.
H510's are 1800's.
All h510's are japanese 'SSS' model imports with twin s.u's as were the P510 'SSS' models.
KP510 and KH510's are the fastback coupe models with 1600 and 1800cc engine respectively.

p.s. i doubt those targa shells really have the 'H'510 chassis numbers on them........but are willing to be proved otherwise.....anyone?....

talldude,
i think your best bet is to check out the homoligation details. You may find the P510 was homoligated with a couple of different donks. this might save you searching for a rare body type for no reason. CAMS can point you in the right direction.

Don't know if this helps, or how legal it may be in competition, but you can build am 1800cc motor by putting an L18 crank and rods in an overbored (2mm if memory serves me correctly) L16 block

You can use either an L16 or L18, doesn't matter. If you use a L16 you'll have a Class B PRC car, or an L18 will give you a class C PRC car. Increasing the displacement of the stock L16 to more than 1600cc will give you a class C PRC. CAMS don't car what your chassis is stamped as P510 or H510. You can use either engine.

I'd do your homework properly on whether you really want to build a historic rally car or a PRC rally car. I think the cut off date is 1968, so if you want a historic 1600 then you will need a pre 68 shell. Most historic events have a non-turbo pre-1980 PRC class anyway, and the PRC rules give you the freedom to build a much more competitive car.
