I'm about to start restoring one of my 1600's to use as a club car - motorkhanas, hill climbs, etc plus to take on the odd drive up the Hunter Valley on weekends.

What do you guys recommend as far as mods go ??

I want to spend a reasonable amount on suspension / handling / braking as in my experience this is the most cost-effective way to improve times in competition.

Then I have an L16 motor, 3 x L18 SSS motors, plus an L20B, a stanza 5 speed, bluebird 5 speed, few sets 1 1/2" SU's, set of 1 3/4" (i think)SU's off a 240Z (no manifold for a 4 cyl though), set of 44mm Solex, various heads and cams with varying amounts of porting, etc done. What combinations of this stuff would be best suited to the job I want it to do??

I know this is a broad question, but any opinions would be appreciated.

I think suspension and brakes is a good starting point. The usual 240k conversion is popular and proven (with big fuckoff springs, and maybe koni adjustables) and i think 4 piston calipers and ventilated disks front would be a must for hillclimbs in the braking area. As for engines, although you have many, have you considered the mighty fj20? It weighs pretty much the same as the original engine and has quite a stronger output. But if you want to use what you have, try working the head on the L20 and use 45 mil wbbers/solex's with bigger jets. Then you could investigate port/polish and even a lumpier cam, enlarge exhaust valves, extractors etc etc. But read the topics below and find more info on your question.
cheers

hey dave, feel like sending one of those sets of SU's down to me? :) I'm serious, I can't afford much but let me know how much you'd part with one of them for by private email and I'll let you know if I can afford it
