Here is a photo from my collection, of the Portman Bluebird in '95, it was pianted up shortly after this in Nissan red/white and blue scheme and then sadly rolled. I also have some photo's of it at Symmons and of it after the paint job, but the negs have seem to gone missing......

Lets start at the beginning, The first mention of a Datsun being raced in Australia seems to be the 1958 Round Australia trail where a Datsun 1000 (an older shaped model, not the 60's one) gained 1st in class A, and was touted as Japans first international sporting victory after the war. Next up seems to be '64 Sandown six Hour race, Nissan Japan supplied two 1300 SS models and were run by the famous 'Scuderia Veloce' team and they ended up 9th and 11th outright. They missed the '65 Bathurst due to a problem with cracking wheels but ran the '66 Gallaher 500 at Bathurst where they finally won class A, a works team was set up in mid to late '60's and they ran Fairlady 1600's (later 1800's then the mighty 2000) in the sportscar class around Australia, as well as Datsun 1000's and later 1600's in production car events (mainly in Victoria). The main driver back then was Doug Whiteford who seemed to be everywhere and John Roxburgh. An interesting note is the 'Gelignite' Jack Murray ran a Prince Skyline 2000GT at the '67 Bathurst and reported that whilst very quick in a straight line it was hopeless in the corners....(Does this make them OK for Nb/c?????)

The first Datsuns sold in Australia were P311's (Bluebirds) and it looks like it was very early 1961 and they sold 514 cars in the first year. The first Datsuns built in Australia were built in Sydney in November '66 and were built alongside VW's in the same factory. The first 1600 rolled out the Australian factory in November '68 and first 1000 was built in Aust in Jan '69.

All the above info came from an excellent article in the 1986/87 'Australian Motoring Year' where the Car of the Year was the Nissan Skyline R31....and 'Australian Sports car world July/sept '82'

I've got a heap of cool photos of the above but my scanner is still not talking with the laptop....I better get it fixed.
Any more info out there???

Here are some photos of the early racing Datsuns, again from the 85/86 Aust Motoring year and sept '82 Sportscar world.

After some more resarch, the above mentioned Skyline must of been S54 Prince Skyline GT-B, not a KPC10. I'll try and dig up some Bathurst results and see how it went?

Eh Eh
The Works Datsun Sports 2000 race car is the original David Mingay modified Prod Sports racer, I have owned it for a while, and regularly still compete in a lot of historic meetings.
Set a new Group O record at 2007 Australian hill climb champs, and a few first outrights and podium places at a lot of circuit meetings and a few fastes lap records in some races.
Incredible but true, It still runs original U20 motor, 234hp at 7500 and 181ft/;b at 5500
It is fitted with parts from Datsun competiton parts catalogues. want to know more, just askme
Check out Group S Racing websites for Morgan Park 2007 and 2008 race reports.
The other little toy is a Datsun 280Z ( not ZX) but original Z USA spec Group S Historic prod sports race car,
Oh and a certain Datsun 120 Y driven by a sheep farmer from Talmalmo on the odd weekends back in the mid 1980's, It has a dinky little FJ24, ex Group 4 Nissan 240RS works mechancials

Oh Man.....

Sorry I havn't been on for a while.....Thats one hell of a collection!! I would love to know more and see some photo's!!

Re the Drummond 120Y, other than the famous Alpine Rally it 'nearlly' won (did win!), was it used much?? State events etc?? has it still got the FJ24 fitted, and is it a Blydenstein built motor? You say full driveline from a 240RS, is the Gearbox an option1 (or 1:1 'rally' box) and is the diff a H190 or something more exotic? I understand Jamie worked for Howard Marsden on the Group C Bluebirds, is this how he scored all the 'good stuff'. How much money would we have to raise to see that well known, floppy hat wearing farmer back in it for the 2009 Alpine???

Thats a serious engine in the Sports 2000!!, was It an original works car? or built up from a road car. It's great to see a race car from the 60's still running and winning. You must scare the hell out of the Sc Boy's!!! so many questions.......

I'll get stuck into a story on the works Fairlady's......

yeah Bluerat, you're pretty well correct.
Jamie built the Y as a backdoor factory effort, long story short, He started on the first shell,
( it had been runover at the Clayton Nissan plant by a truck) it was known as the "Blue Door" shell, he done the cage and suspension pick ups, and got it to rolling shell, when Howard (RIP) had a look, and said to Jamie to not bother with a bent one, and got a straight one, this became the "white door" shell, it got escort world cup x-member, H190 back end, proper holinger 1:1 dog gears box and yep, the 280hp at 9500 rpm, 250 ft'lb at 5500 rpm Bill Blydenstrin FJ24 ( Ex Africa nissan works 240RS ) It runs 55mm Webers dty sump, and is one of the hi-power FJ's.
I did own the "blue door" shell in the early nineties, it is now back with the guy that originally bought it off Jamie, The "White door" shell was sold to Kevin Roben, who put Portman into it in the late 1980's but Pots couldn't beat Roben's times in rally sprints and rallies,
Yes It did "win" an Alpine, and came second in another, it ran in th Toshiba rally sprints around Canberra, was seen o TV a lot, and in the original SBS TV Rally 83, and 84 VHS Vidoeo's ( I've still got mine)
I'll tell about the Sports 200 next time, Any questions so far?
I have got plenty of pictures, but not been put onto a scanner to go on computer yet.
I have a question? How do I put pics onto my posts???
Jason

The story with the works rally cars was that because they were Jap rego'd/owned they had to go back to Japan at the end of the event/season, hence all the cars in Zama, but rumour is that the drivelines/suspension stayed in Aust!!
I read on http://www.rallysportmag.com.au that George Furys 1979 Stanza stayed in Australia until the mid 90's when it was sold and went to the UK, where it was for sale in 2007. Anyone know what happened to it after that?

Furys 1978 Stanza is at Zama.

Furys Bluebird is at the Trackside Restaurant Gosford.

Great photo's there Thommo, I'm sure the third one down, the air borne Stanza, is at the bottom of he famous mineshaft in Canberra.
I know this is a waaaay old post, but just to clarify - that's not from Canberra. It's at the Southern Cross in Port Macquarie - no idea what stage or year as I wasn't even born back then. There are a lot of photos around of various cars going over this very jump.

I'm actually quite curious as to where this particular jump was and if it still exists, as I know most of the roads around the area and I've never seen it?

One of the works stanza's was sold to Ron Cremin - Michael Valentine has one as well and still runs it, but both the handle and the head of the axe have been replaced.

Both these cars were sold without engines.

Your spot on Johnno it was the 1980 Southern cross, the photo is on page 221 of the 1980 Aust motor racing yearbook, no.10, I'd say the photo was taken on the Amaroo MX track which they used as a stage, as all the other photo's on the page are and the text is talking about it. The driver is Fury who went out with a blown engine and the event was was won by Dunko in the other works Stanza. That jump is now someones backyard, LOL.

Thats very interesting Lindsay, hopefully we might see them at a round of the classic ARC?
