probably a bit dodgyer than welding the coilover gear to the struts, but has anyone ever used shaft collars
for the threaded collar to sit on.
would it even be legal??

Firstly, I have no idea about legal issues but I suppose it would be easy enough to ring up your local Department of transport and ask them...


I would say that it would be NOT legal. Reason being its too hard to inspect strength wise. Yes it might have enough clamping pressure and friction that it can hold 1000kg, but the strength of it isn't dependent on those specs, its dependent on how tight you tighten those two bolts, and that is a bit harder to judge and inspect.

For example, you weld the collars on, you get it inspected, engineer ticks it off and its safe to drive.

You tighten those bolts up, get it approved, (I dont know how they'd check it though? With a torque wrench to see if it was done up to manufacturers specs?) but who is to say they will stay like that forever.... someone can easily take them off??


but yes for racing maybe fine!

I would not go near them. You would be crazy to rely of them. Just thinking what could happen mid corner on a track makes me cringe. Welding all the way for a coilover setup cheap, quick, strong and easy.

what if the collar extended all the way to the bottom of the strut so it couldnt slip down?

I tend to agree.

Plus, for US$16 each, plus postage, (say AU$50 all up) why not just pay your local engineering / welding place to weld them on for you ? Would only take a few minutes to do and shouldn't cost any more.

how do people use the aluminum threaded sleeves on steel strut tube. you would have to weld a ring on the
tube similar to the shaft collar for the sleeve to sit on, wouldnt you??

A short ring is welded onto the strut so the threaded sleeve has something to sit on.

Yep that's how my T3 Ground control ones are fitted.
