Good move Graham. I've only blown up one diff in a 180B rally car, which had had a very harsh life (a bolt head broke off the crownwheel and got caught in the mesh.)

My worked L20B 1600 street car had the stock diff in it for 7 years and about 100,000km of hard driving (including motorkhanas, rallying and track days). Of course if you're going to do burnouts and flat changes, then you can kill any diff.

Depending on what you're doing to it, the standard diff might do you. If it does blow, then replace it with a R180, or if you're feeling cashed up, R200 LSD. I don't think that all R200's are LSD though. I recall seeing open R200's advertised for $250 or so.

There's a recent thread in this forum about welding diffs (titled "locked or not"). It discusses the pros and cons of locked diffs, LSD's, open diffs, etc.

i think it would be safe to say that over the last couple of years in victoria the stanza has been one of the most dominant cars in club rallying,
far more so than what 1600s/180bs have been
Could this have something to do with 1600s and 180Bs only being allowed to run the L18 and Stanzas being able to run the L20B under the PRC rules??? Most of the 1600s and 180Bs I know of are 2L while the Stanzas are normally 2.4L. I know that most of the Stanzas (to the same spec - webers, cam, exhaust, etc) have more grunt than my 180B rallycar...

I guess my point is, if the 1600s and 180Bs could run the 2.4L would the situation still be the same?

aym23q, aren't the subaru diffs a viscous (fluid) LSD? A clutch pack (nissan) or torsen is prefered. Plus most people with turbos would probably snap an R160 pretty easily.

The newer LSD's, (RS liberty onwards) are viscous..
earlier Subaru LSD's are clutch pack or mechanical?? yeah earlier ones arent viscous.. (RX turbo leone, Vortex, US spec Brumbys etc..)

The Subaru LSD's are much stronger than ur regular open datto R160.. dunno why though. But its a much cheaper alternative than many..

why is viscous not prefered?
