So I better start with the story. I've been wanting one of these things for about 10 years now.

Obviously they aren't the easiest cars to come by at the best of times. Anyway back around the early 2000's (03-04?) one came up on datnet from Vince (owned a well known orange rotary powered 1600 - PLEEZN) for the reasonable price of $200. Minus an engine but from the rest looked complete.

Unfortunately at the time I was building my 180b, living at home and limited monetary funds so I was unable to buy it. Luckily someone on there did by and it went from somewhere around punchbowl up to the central coast. Not long after that guy decided it was going to be to much work and offered it up for free to whoever collected it.

Jon from Datnet collected it and stored it in his garage for a while before (i'm guessing here), needing the space back, so off it went to another member Graeme and in the back of his shed.

Fast forward 6 or so years to the present and it's now sitting in my driveway. To my surprise is very complete and in reasonable condition for a 46 year old car.

According to the ID plate, it's a 1965 P411 wagon. However the tailights and crossover wipers suggest it's a P410. Around that time though it wasn't uncommon for Datsun to have crossover models that carried parts over from older models, so I guess it's possible.

Anyway, today I took a few snaps, the only things missing from the car so far is a motor, radiator and keys. I had already preempted the pickup and got myself a J15 motor & radiator that needed a bit of love out of a 620.

Enough talking, onto the pictures;

[ img ]

Engine bay as it stands, everything present (except the obvious). Noting the weird way the engine mounts.
[ img ]

Front end all there
[ img ]

ID plate, I was always of the assumption all 65 models were P410's?
[ img ]

Front Interior all there, front seat needs repairs, dash uncracked, steering wheel in decent condition except for some cracks around the base plastic.
[ img ]

Rear seat - surprisingly good
[ img ]

Fuel filler behind the rear number plate - cool
[ img ]

Spare tyre, jack & rats nest all present. You can even see the original colour on the back of the floor hood
[ img ]

The ass end - noting the 410 lights and interesting metal symbols that are present on both sides
[ img ]

The worst of a very small amount of rust on the whole car (drivers side rear quarter)

[ img ]

Last one of the motor I picked up. Looks bad but after about 20 cans of degreaser and some elbow grease is getting there.

[ img ]

Priorities are to get it running first and tidy the engine bay, around get the brakes sorted around the same time. It will be a lot of tidying up things and fiddly crap to get it looking decent. Only looking at historic rego at this stage.

Looks like its in pretty good condition, should be an interesting project.

I've never really looked at a J-series before, I was expecting it to be like an A-series, or even the fairlady R / H series, but it looks to be an older design with ports shared between cylinders, little pushrod cover plates.

They are a very basic motor Dave. The bolts you see in the picture are as you say are shared for the ports, they just use big washers.

Another interesting thing is the nuts that hold the rocker cover on, are actually the nuts that hold the head on to

I've pulled the head off for a mini reco, I've got a full gasket kit as well which cost me 4 times the motor price

Hoping to do it all myself with some assistance. I'm not a motor internals person, so hopefully I can better myself starting with a lego motor like this.

Cool.

If you're interested, I have a factory service manual for the 411, and a spare parts catalogue for the 410 that I could scan / photocopy (might take a few weeks though)

Dave that would be awesome. Alternatively I'd be happy to buy them if you didn't want/need them.

Awesome car. I love it! Must be special because of your history with it.

If you don't have a copy I have a mint J series engine service manual which covers J13 J15 and J16. Covers mechanical and electrical. Can organize a copy if you like.

This will make a unique project. Can you post a picture of the difference between 410 and 411 rear lights? I don't think I've ever seen one of these cars, maybe once at a wreckers, so I wish you the best of luck getting it back on the road.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Dave has offered to scan some engine pics for me so I'll see if he gets time to do that whenever he can (I'm not in a major rush and there isn't a lot to these motors).

Green200b the 411 tailights are like this pic below, long and rectangle

[ img ]

Fortunately the condition of lights on mine are good. Only the passenger side has a faded amber lense, but I'm hoping I can hit that with a light coat of paint to get a similar effect.

I've been having random thoughts on the plan for this thing. If a paint job ever came up I'd consider painting it a flat colour like this splitty.

Also considering some sort of EFI down the line, but keeping the J series. More of a hobby experiment than anything. That's a long way off but I'm always keeping my eyes open.

Great to see you with the wagon Martin. Like everyone else, I look forward to seeing it take shape

I have a J15 620 ute radiator here and maybe some engine mount rubbers too? Will have a dig for you.

Does a "Vince" belong in the known owners list? (ie Mr Pleeeeeezn) I vaguely recall the modern history lesson beginning with him.

Thanks guys. Jeff most certainly does as he was essentially the one who got this car floating around the datsun circles. I'll edit him in there.

With the engine mounts it's looking like I'll have to make some. Below is a pic of what they should look like if you had a standard J13. They actually appear to bolt to a plate that bolts behind the timing cover, but not like that on a 620 I believe.

The mount holes are there at least.

Here is a pic from a guys 411 in NZ that had the mounts.

[ img ]

I'm trying to hassle him to see if he can find his old ones, as he has put an A14 in his car. If not the USA might be worth a shot.
