hey guys could anyone help me here?
well i thought my headlight relay was hammerd tonight running dim as anything then when triggering spotlights .... 150 watt relayed high beams wouldnt work im thinking hmmm i have made all new earths even huge leads from the engine and battery to ground cant be those it then wouldnt work and i heard a buzzing screach from my large metal relay in the engine bay .
I then walked away for 10 minutes come back car wouldnt start but lights worked fine but dull. i think it then was my alternator beacause the car didnt start after that short time . well after jump starting off my other car the 180b was running from 10.9 volts then down to 7.6 volts towards the end after 5 minutes while running measured from the battery leads running crappy im guessing wasnt charging at all. my other cars all ready anything upto 14 when reved up.

Now i do drive this car mild to wild and it uses a early alternator with internal regulator that i believe to be in the 72 early 180b more like a 1600 than the others entirely different engine bay and interior loom to s2 180b upto 76 etc.

is there a better upgrade and whats involved in trouble shooting or just plain thorw it away and whats the best option?

ps i am now running the round sss dash 2000gtx jap lights with more globes and factory air conditioning could be using the amps right up.

If its internally regulated it may have a brush pack bolted into the rear of the alternator with two small bolts.
These brushes wear down and loose contact. Fortunately they are easy/cheap to replace.
Check this out first as rarely the windings let go inside the alt...

The image above shows the two spring loaded carbon brushes that wear out (lower rh side of pic).

thats your brush holder and reg in the back there. motocraft just make bits for ford like brake light switches and whatnotjust like most other brands they tried to dip into the bosch market.
quick question did you ever have a battery warning light on your dash if so does it light up now?

i had a charge light but i think it didnt light up must of been a crappy loose socket there was a couple in my sss dash that were not quite a perfect tight fit i may recheck that.
