I'm looking to replace the standard speedo in my 70 model 1600 with an electric one.

Can anyone suggest a reasonable speedo (out of another car or aftermarket, I don't mind which) that may fit in place of the stock 1600 one with no (or very limited) mods to the standard dash ? While I'm asking, how about a tacho that can be driven from a Bluebird electronic dizzy and fit in the hole to the left of the temp / fuel gauges ?

Also, suggestions for how to drive the speedo - what sensors / where to mount / etc ? Datsport mount a sensor that operates off the tailshaft, just not sure exactly what the sensor is / how its done exactly. Looks like magnets on the tailshaft and a Hall Effect sensor reading the revoutions ? Sorry, not too good with electronic stuff.

Basically, I want to get a working speedo back in my 1600 now that I'm running an S15 6 speed which has no provision for a speedo drive.

Dave, I'm running the VDO electronic speedo, and the factory tacho
The VDO required a bit of stuffing around to get it to fit, and you use the electronic sender off the S14 gearbox. I assume you're running S15, so you may have trouble getting a signal using this method.
Trent (Hailest) is running a GPS based speedo which might suit your needs. I think Datsport sell them!

Yep, S15 box has no provision for a sensor / sender at all. I have been using racechrono software on a Nokia phone / QStarz bluetooth GPS unit on the road for a while, but can't use this on the track when doing regularity events as it is a laptimer as well - you even need to cover clocks, etc in regularity events to prevent "cheating". I had the issue at Phillip Island on the weekend where strict pitlane speed limits where in effect (complete with radar testing apparently), and I had no way of knowing if I was over the limit.

For the regularity events, usually you just burn a CD with a song the same time as the lap time you want to run. Then play that.
Song 2 by Blur is exactly 2 minutes long. Handy for Phillip Island 6 hour events when your nominated time is 2minutes WOOHOOO!

On a more serious note: GPS based speedo may be the go for you Dave...

I've heard of guys recording their own track that recites the names of the corners at the appropriate time, then looping that and burning to CD.

A song of the correct length is a bit less obvious I guess.

They didn't have to worry about me, no CD (not even a radio) in my 1600.

Perhaps that's why our team only managed 47th out of 50

I don't think GPS Speedos are road legal but fine for track.

I've,used bike Speedos before for accuracy. Magnet on inside lip of drivers rim and then The sensor and the Speedo sits ontop of steering colomn. You can get back lit ones but the wire less ones don't always work due to the cars electrics interference.

Most are calibrated to 300kmh too lol. I can't pedal more than 62kmh lol.

unfamilia - I'm not too worried about legality for the road, my 1600 is only on club (historic) rego and would realistically get driven only a couple of times a year on the road. Might be a concern for those that drive their car regularly on the road though. I might try to find out what the rules are here in NSW.

If you have no digital pickup this would be great

then you can get a box that has a mechanical output to drive your old cable speedo. You can buy them in oz from some hotrod shop for $800, but i have a link somewhere for the same part from the manufacturer on the states.
