I have an R31 alternator to use on my 1600, but am unsure on wiring it up.

The old Bosch alternator had all connections going to a bolt-type terminal, and one wire running to a spade terminal. The R31 alternator has the same bolt-type main terminal, but has no equivalent spade terminla. It does however have two smaller spade terminals on what looks like the brush holder thingy.

Any thoughts ?

The spade terminal circled in red is missing on the R31 alt, although it looks like it has provision for the terminal, it just is missing. Two smaller ones on the R31 alt are shown by the arrow.

The large 8mm[?] bolt terminal is +12V supply to the battery/starter motor.
The two pin socket that is part of the black box/regulator: -
One pin should be labelled L for the charge Lamp circuit in the dash;
the other should be labelled G for Ground or E for Earth

2 - battery
3 - starter motor
18 - alternator

From the LHS the R31 alt wires are: -
B - Black to GROUND [pin terminal]
W/L and W/L White/Blue tracer, +12V OUTPUT [bolt terminal]
W/B - White/Black tracer, to CHARGE LAMP at instrument cluster [pin terminal]
Sorry about the diagram, it is the best I have

Excellent  Thanks.

The terminals are marked "L" and "S", so I'll assume "L" for "Lamp" and the other is earth. Is the earth neccessary ? I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to run a wire to the block or chassis.

Use the earth terminal, it prevents dodgy grounding when you rely on the mounting points to do the job.
Especially if you use a ball jointed threaded rod thingy to adjust the alternator belt tension.
The ball joints will have teflon [insulating] bearings.

Mention that you have bought the alternator and forgot to rescue the plug.
They shouldn't charge you for it.

For anyone following along at home, what Nissanman suggested worked perfectly.

"L" to dash lamp, "S" to earth, all other connections to the large bolt-on terminal. I couldn't get the correct connector, so used small single spade connectors - if you can, get the bit of the R31 wiring harness that connects to the "L" and "S" terminals to make it easier.

R31 alternator physically bolted onto the L18 engine fine, belt adjusting bolthole in the top mounting bracket on the alternator is in a slightly different place but still bolted up to the standard alternator bracket.

Swap the pulley to the L18 "V" belt type, bolt it on and away you go - all good
