Sounds like it is running retarded.
I say, ditch the timing light and advance it till it pings. Then back it off a little.

i think he might be talking about "run on" or "dieseling", not pre-ignition, its a bit hard to understand the original post.

My British su's ran on....98 oct fuel fixed the issue for me

I had this problem for a while. I bought suburu upper engine cleaner and followed the directions. Worked a treat. I bought it from the suburu parts shop in preston.
