I've owned 3 Buick Commodores

VP, VS (was rebuilt at 80,000kms and properly balanced), VX (Supercharged)

How I rate the engines in order

Reliability

VP, VS, VX

Power

VX, VS, VP

Fuel consumption

VS, VP, VX

Serviceability

VP, VS, VX

Mileage

VP (380,000kms never missed a beat I loved this old car), VS (280,000kms till I sold it and it still ran beautifully), VX (270,000kms - two blown head gaskets, anyone want to buy it? :x )

Common theme here is the VS. The engine had a few more tweaks over the more rattlier VP so it produced more power but Holden never fixed the autos so they blew them around 150,000kms almost like clockwork (but rebuilds with better internals go forever).

I've since (as of last week) got the missus a VE Series 2 SV6, totally different engine with lots more power, torque and economy. If I was going to Holden V6 a Datto the VE Series 2 (or VF) would be the one I would use as they are so much better

Do the alloytec's in the late VE's still have timing chain issues?

i actually considered a 1976 vega gt with the TA Performance alloy v6 buick replica but to get them to handle like a 260z its quite a feat & vegas are now looking like toranas here for babyboomers

Shave 500kg off a VS the best way - by making it a Datsun :) - and you'd actually have something very nice to drive. A lot nicer than (for example) guys who do SR20DE or similar as the power/torque delivery would be great comparitively.

That said, I'd never do it myself unless it was an absolute sh!tter.
