Hi all,
I recently picked up a Datsun 521 that hadn't been started in 10 years and has basically been sitting in a paddock waiting to be saved.
Anyway I gave it a good clean , drained the old fuel and put new fuel in. Put a new battery in and thought I would try and fire it up.
After a bit of messing round and tipping a bit of petrol down the carb the old j13 fired up and ran.
Anyway it blew a bit of smoke and started to run really well , smooth idle and reved well.
The problem is when I stop the car it seems to loose fuel pressure or something as the only way to get it running again is to pour more petrol into the top of the carb and pump the accelerator. It then runs well again but same thing if I stop the ute.
The engine is a standard j13 1969 model 521 ute. Any help or ideas would be great thanks.

Does it have a window in the float bowl?
If so, have a good look to see if there is fuel in it.
After 10 years I would fit a new fuel filter and check that the fuel pump is working.
Disconnect the output from the pump and crank the engine.
Fuel should spurt from the pump.

Thanks, I think the fuel seems to be draining out of the float bowl when I stop it.

That can only happen if there is a loose drain plug or faulty washer at the base of the float bowl.

Just went down and checked and no fuel at all in the float bowl. I will have a look at the bottom of the carb tomorrow. It just surprised me how well it went when I actually got it going.
