Hi, I have a l20b motor fitted to my Commer van which im restoring with a BW 35 3 speed and i want to upgrade to the l4n71b 4 speed and was wondering if it would mate straight up to the l20b, redoing the gearbox supports and drive shaft is not a problem as everything is pulled apart anyway.
any info would be great.
Cheers

Anything that is behind the L series engine will work.
The bell housing bolt pattern is common across all L series engines.

No, the RB engine leans the wrong way and I would think the bell housing pattern would be different to the L series.
I have a 4 speed auto for the L series here but ATM I can't remember it's designation.

Have a look here. Mentions mating one to an a-series. Maybe it's possible that you can get one from an rb30 and put an l-series bellhousing on it?

I think what they mean is that they were electronically controlled.
Transmission ECU and all that.
If you want, I can try and identify the 4 speed I have, It was originally fitted to my son's L28 in an MR30 Skyline.
No ECU but it does have an electric torque convertor lockup button :)

Thanks that would be great, and if i'm not asking to much to have a few photos so i know what to look for.
The local commodore wreckers has gearboxes from both the VL and skyline not sure what the difference is i probably need to go there and investagate further. i know a pick and pay wreckers in brisbane called Kelly's and they have heaps of datsuns all lined up so maybe another trip there is in order.
Cheers

It would be if they both suit the L series engine block :)
