hi ozdats, i have a 1971 datsun 1600, and i have a 5 speed stanza gearbox (dogleg) but im running a standard 1600 diff, and the ratio is extremely short, i cant get near 100kmph without it revving really high. ive been looking at putting another diff in but i wanted something that will be good for the track but much more comfortable on the road, aswell as a bolt on, and im not keen oon swapping over the gearbox. any ideas as to what will be a long ratio differential?
will an R180 or R200 bolt on and or be any good for whast i have?
thanks everyone!!

Was your 1600 originally manual or auto ? Any possibility its had a diff change over the years to a different ratio ? Both the standard 1600 diff ratios shouldn't be too bad on the highway with a stanza 5 speed, basically the same as the original 4 speed with an overdrive 5th to drop revs.

An originally auto car will have a numerically higher ratio diff (3.9 as opposed to 3.7 in a manual) which would result in slightly higher highway revs.

If you have the stock 1600 manual ratio of 3.7, you won't easily find a diff to drop revs any further without going to something like a 3.54 (or thereabouts) R180 out of a 240Z / 260Z. If you do this, you'll lose acceleration, so not so good for the track.

If it is really revvy, I would suspect someone has already changed the diff. Perhaps may be an idea to remove the rear diff cover and have a sticky, you should find the ratio marked on the edge of the crownwheel - it will have stamped something like 37/10 - divide one by the other to get the ratio (eg 37/10 becomes 3.7)

Hi alan,
there are lots of old topics on diff ratio's and diff fitment into 1600 in the forum if you search.
Sounds like you have a 4.1 or 4.44 diff in there.

To get you started:

I imagine youll need to look for a 3.7 or 3.9 ratio.
Easiest diff is stick with the std R160, or for more strength a slightly larger R180 as it bolts straight to the mounts. R180's just need to have the matching R180 output stub axles as they are larger than the std ones in your current R160.
R200 diffs require custom rear mount and 260z halfshafts or custom cv axles (more complicated) but these are also the best way to get an lsd centre and ultimate diff strength in a 1600...

P.s. also check your rear tyre diameter and consider checking your true speed with a gps. If your tyres are too small a simple tyre change to a larger size might fix your problem. Gps will tell you how far out your speed is and you can then work out approximately what diff ratio you have. If you do swap the diff dont forget to get the correct gearbox speedo gear so your speedometer reads correctly...

Agreed. My 200B revved as 3,400ish with a fours-speed and just under 3,000rpm with a five-speed. That was running an L20B, Bluebird five-speed, 3.9 diff and 195/60/14 tyres. In saying that , if you do have a 4.1 diff and want to try a different ratio, I have a 3.9 R160 you can have for free if you like.
