Hey guys,

I own a 1979 Stanza gx (1600) and have trouble getting it to idle. Replaced a good deal of the electrics ( Plugs, leads, dizzy cap, points, condenser) and still have trouble with it. Are there any common problems with this make of car that anyone is aware of?
Doesn't idle when I pull up at lights, requires a little bit of accelerator to keep it going at rest. Have idled it up manually with the carby but that is only a temporally solution as it is reving pretty high just sitting at lights etc...

Cheers,
Pricey

Might be a vacuum leak causing that.
You should check all the plumbing that attaches to the inlet manifold for perished/split rubber hoses etc.
Do BOTH ends of the hoses and also inspect the integrity along their length.
Vacuum hose is dirt cheap to replace.
Have you set the ignition timing correctly after changing all those electrical components?
You also need to check the idle mixture is correct.
I do that with a vacuum gauge.

I have the Stanza FSM if you want an electronic copy

Theres 2 adjustment screws on the carby, idle speed and mixture ratio.
Adjust the mixture so its at its highest idle point, then lower the idle speed to the lowest possible without stalling.
Then make sure the mixture is giving you the highest idle speed again.
If that makes sence..

Also do what Graeme said...

I'd be checking the float level in the carby too, assuming it's a standard down draft carby.

I had the same problem with a 1600 and the float had a hole in it and, well, it didn't float. Carby kept flooding itself at low revs.

After it stalls, is it hard to start?

So I check a sh*t ton of things, pulled the carby out and pulled it to bits. Put everything back in and it started/ ran completely fine. Up until I bump the wires that go to the carby and it cut out. Turns out the wire connection was faulty.

All that messing around and buying parts for a lose wire haha. Cheers for the suggestions.
