Hi this has surely been covered a million times but im hopeless with the search bar so if anyone can give me a link to some info id appreciate it. I want to build a l20 turbo on a really tight budget so im thinking of fabricating as much as I can myself or getting mates to cut and weld stuff up at work. Im not interested in running 9 second quarters I just want to have a bit of fun with the l20. Can I use the original exhaust manifold to bolt the turbo to and run a pipe to a plenum on the carby? And what internals would need upgrading?

Do you want to go EFI intercooled turbo or drawthrough/blowthrough setup?
draw through would probably be best if you are on a really tight budget.

Basically you have the turbo bolted onto the exhaust manifold with all exhaust passing through it to the main exhaust, turbo sucks fuel through a carby and into the head.

Cut up a std manifold to fit the turbo... diy carb box, run a t25 off a silvia with low boost.... get more fuel into it somehow, ???, profit!

efi setup is not cheap. im half way through an L20 build and have spend $650 on manifolds, $150 on rods, $500 on pistons,, new timing kit, havnt even got the block apart to send to the machine shop yet. then theres the intercooler setup, injectors, rail, computer, wiring. probly looking around the $3500 mark by the time I have it all together and that's still cheap.

...not to mention surge tank, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel regulator, efi hose and clamps, sensors, tuning, etc.

Cheap draw thru setups pop up used every now and then for between $500 and $1500.
Keep your eyes peeled and put wanted ads up everywhere if you are on a budget.

Cheapest way i could think of to do it would be to get a flange made up that bolts to your stock exhasut manifold and run a single large pipe (2.5") or what ever fits to a turbo flange easy and brace it up.

Next find a carb im thinking a SU 2" or maybe a 32/36 weber and build a flange that bolts to the bottom of the car and then runs to the intake of the turbo.
Add a throttle cable from something (scrap yard time)

Will look pretty rough (interesting) but there is no reason why it won't work.

No intercoolers needed run internal wastegate pressure on a VF10 or a T25G or something cheap and easy to find off a similar sized engine and way you go. Time to go have fun adjusting mixtures to stop it melting.

Hi Mate,

I have an intercooler that will suit your needs as the L series needs to have the inlet and outlet on the same side, i had it in my race car when i had the turbo'd L in it.

I had mine injected and i had found a cheap manifold locally that was of an injected L series, was really simple and made a good 270Hp.

Let me know if your interested and ill post a pic up for you, it is a PWR core with custom tanks top and bottom.

Cheers

you can see the top of the cooler where the throttle body is, this is a falcon unit, worked really well. ill find some better pics for you.

Pics of the turbo on the L20B we had

It's a Nissan one (maybe off a Patrol?) running as a draw through with an SU. The motor was heavily worked for it, Z22 crank and a lot of head work. It ran pretty well but it was on the way out.

I've still got the turbo, in two minds whether to keep it or not. It bolts straight on to an L Series, PM me if you're interested

I bought an L4 turbo kit on eBay for $500 a long time ago, sold it on here possibly after I rolled the 180b after having never put it on.

Had a 1'3/4" SU, S4 RX7 turbo with carbon seal, and manifolds / piping to suit.

My point is keep an eye out and stuff like that pops up from time to time.

Wish I still had it, just bought a new 180b...

Regards
Jordan
