Hey Guys,

Will this gearbox bolt onto the L16 in a 510? Will any other modifications be required (driveshaft etc).

Thanks in advance.

Yes it will bolt on. However, it is longer than a 1600 4 speed, so you will need to shorten the tailshaft, use a modified / custom gearbox crossmember, and cut a larger hole through the transmission tunnel for the shifter to come up through.

Hmmm, thanks for the help. Is this a decent choice or are there easier options out there for a 5speed?

This is pretty much the standard modification for an L Series with a 5 speed and probably the easiest as well.

There is the "stumpy" 5 speed from the R30 Skyline, if you can find one.
I've never compared the measurements, but just looking at it next to an FJ20 5 speed for example, it is indeed stumpy.

There's always the 5 speed from the A10 Violet/Stanza/510. These are the same length as the 4 speed, with the same speedo cable location & inpet & output shaft diameters as stock. The only drawback is the shift pattern is the dogleg style first gear, & some I don't know if the car was sold in NZ. It's a overdrive 5 speed, it's model number is FS5W63A.

As Graeme said . The stumpy 5 speed from an R 30 fits straight in (i was told to get one from a 2.4litre fuel injected version why i don't know) which i found . Perfect fit --no tail shaft mod--very minimal enlargement of tunnel for shifter if any. Can't remember what i did for mount but wasn't anything drastic. Maybe reversed it.
