I'm looking to replace the standard 1600 radiator with something a bit lighter, thinner and with a bit more surface area. Cutting the radiator support panel is no problem for me! 8)

As I'm currently sticking with my L20B I'd like to keep the hose connections about where they currently are.

Any suggestions?

I measured up an early 90's Camry radiator while at the wreckers yesterday, and at first glance it seems to fit the bill. Anyone tried one of these?

Cheers,

yeah I had the camry one for a while. Actually, it is still in the shed. It worked OK but it's not very thick and has those plastic tanks that can crack.
You will need to cut the rad support panel to make use of the extra surface area on the radiator. Make sure you get the top and bottom mounts if you buy the radiator.

S2 Blueys and 200Bs have a bit more vertical space to play with than the good ol' 1600 when it comes to the radiator support panel. :(

The Camry radiator's approx 430mm tall x 700mm wide and 50mm thick at it's thickest (the bottom tank).

Looks like this might be worth a go, then. :D

Cheers,

Chris, the camry radiator might struggle with a huge intercooler in front of it. Mine only had half an intercooler in front.
Although IIRC you have webers so this information can be for other people interested in this.

i think that if you get the 1600 rad redone into a 3 core it provides more than enough cooling..

There's no huge intercooler going in front of this - the engine's a NA L20B. :)

And the 3-core's not an option if you're going for something thinner and lighter.

Cheers,

Chris,

There is a little bit of work in it I believe (custom lower pipe, drilling new mounts, and making the opening for air flow bigger), but an N13 Pulsar radiator can fit. N13 radiators are considerably thinner and have a much bigger frontal area. Some of the rally guys do it on their 1600's and 180B's (including mine). :)

I've got an N13 pulsar radiator in the parts pile, and it's:

i) about 10% smaller in frontal area than the 89 Camry radiator and is the same thickness
ii) has both the top and bottom hose connections on the opposite side for use with an L20B

So I'm guessing that the GTiR radiator that Baz is talking about is for an SR20 conversion?

The Camry radiator's hose necks are almost spot on for the L20B. I've still got a small job of engineering some mounts, but this shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the input! :D

Sorry Chris I should have been more specific, I meant thinner and more frontal area than a standard 1600 or 180B radiator.

Thanks for the info about the Camry radiators though, I will keep that in mind for up-grading my road car radiator. :D
