 Post subject: Wiring up sr to 1600

Hey guys
Bit stumped at what to do right hand side in regards to wiring up alternator and starter motor. Do I connect the wires from my alternator to the standard 1600 ones? There was a cable from the standard loom going straight to the starter motor. What is that for? How does the ignition circuit get power and what wire is charge light?
Photo attached is what is currently from the standard loom.

Thanks Trent. I have that diagram. It came with the loom when u got it back from Pete. Wasn't sure how power was supplied to the ignition switch? What is the wire coming out of my 1600 loom going to the starter motor positive terminal for?

Hey mate,

No worries, I ditched the factory loom and built a new one.

With the old one (correct me if I'm wrong) their should be one wire that goes to constant +ve This will then feed the IGN switch via the fuse box. This is the one that will be connected to the batt, starter, alt.

Take a pic and I might be able to assist with that.

If you have the time I recommend creating a new loom, the wire in the cars is pretty old now and it's not too tricky to replace with a fresh loom.

I've taken 2 pics. One is of a wire coming out of the main loom that goes straight to the positive terminal of the starter motor. The other pic shows what I think is a fuse and relay. The red wire on the right connects straight to the positive terminal on the battery. Not sure which one of these wires is needed to be connected still.

Hi Daniel,

OK, the red wire that goes to the fuse (Looks like an old fusible link) and relay, my guess is that this is for a headlight loom or something that's been put in afterwards. Judging by the pics, this shouldn't be required to get the car started. I suggest spending some time with that real and trace the wires to see where they end up (It doesn't look stock).

Yeah it looks like it goes into the headlight loom. You reckon I should still hook up the wire that originally went to the positive terminal of the starter motor?

Hey mate,

If you must use the old loom then it "should" be OK however without testing I couldn't be certain.

I'm not 100% sure the way they have wired the relay though, does that black wire goes to earth (can you check?) or does that black wire go back to the headlight switch?

From what I can see it looks like it goes to earth.
The biggest thing I'm not sure about is how power is supplied to the ignition switch.

I didn't even read the above posts so may have been covered,
SR alternator requires a "Light' and "sense" wire input plus a large (100amp) battery out put to battery.

Find the sense and light wires in the factory loom and join these to it.

The starter requires a heavy cable down to it and also a signal wire from the key switch. (black yellow trace) its a heavy wire.

Pretty simple really if you take a little time and care and track things down with a wiring diagram and or multimeter.

DON'T run your engine with alternator wires not connected. You alternator will freely produce unregulated power and cook the stator. There is no coming back from that.

IF you really must test run your engine before wiring alternator. Join both light and sense wires and connect them to an ignition feed, (TEMPORARY ONLY)
