Car is now on the road but have a bit of an issue.
Engine is a J15 with four speed, but gearbox is stuck in fourth (I've been told its the syncro bushes?). I've been on the lookout for a second hand box and haven't had any luck yet.
I know where there is a couple of 720's that I could get an L series engine and box just not sure on how easy the change over was. Would it be worth just doing the swap in the long run?
If anyone has done the swap personally please let me know if you were happy, the car will be a daily driver and the J15 was really cheap on fuel!
I also have a 5 speed box to suit the L series that came with it I was told It was the one with the proper H pattern?
Any help will be appreciated I want to have it up and running by the 20th of this month for the Ballarat swap :P

Nice ute!
Good luck sourcing parts for the j series engines . I recently bought a Datsun 521 ute with a j13 and although mine is now running fine I would be hard pressed to find parts to fix it if it wasn't.
I have read some Datsun and mgb parts are interchangeable in the j series, the twin su carbs fit etc but not sure about the gearboxes.
L series swaps are not a straight swap into j series cars as engine mount placement for one is different but this is not a huge drama I guess as new ones could be welded on.
By the way what size rims are you running ?

Thanks I suppose moving the mounts wouldn't be too hard might end up being my only option. The rims are 15x7's and I've just got 205 65 tyres all round.

Been a little while since my last post but got the car running again thanks to a helpful ozdatter (dean74z) and have since installed twin hitachis and hit the front with the lowering stick. Can't go any lower until the stockies are on.[ img ]
