Hi just wondering I have put twin dellortos onto my 1600 as the original carb gave up and wanted Alitalia bit more for driving in modern traffic. But since I have done this the temp gauge goes up to between 1/2 and 3/4. Before with the carb it sat on the temp line and sat there even going up hills. I have had the radiator flushed and flushed the block and it hasn't changed wondering if this is normal and is there a way of me getting it to sit where it used to.thanks

Maybe your mixtures are too lean? Have your jetted it to suit your application? Revs/displacement?

....like he said....
However, I always advise folks who complain of temperature problems to use another method to check what the temperature REALLY is.
e.g. a hand held infrared device or a direct reading digital/analogue gauge.
I used this little fella when I was calibrating the temperature gauge in my '65 Fairlady: -

You can also get longer K type sensor leads so the display can be located in a more convenient place in the cabin: -

I clamped the eye under spark plug #1 to read the actual engine temperature.

All of the above a dirt cheap on eBay: -

Yeah I have had it dyno tuned so as far as I know it's all correct as they jetted it all then. Now I have a calibrated infrared temp gun on hand what temps should I be looking for? Jane also where should I get the readings from? Thanks

I would check the lower half of the thermostat housing, where the temperature gauge sender is located.
Then you can correlate with the gauge reading and make sure it is reading true.
You can also read the upper half of the housing to check when the thermostat opens e.g. 85degC.
At that point, there will be a rise in temperature of the coolant and parts going to the radiator top connection.

I drilled a 1/8 hole in the stat to act as a bypass. as most sidedrafts the water passage holes are not used(use a pipe plug)
this might help

recheck your timming. try 12-14 BTDC

on hot days my mikunis start to cook and starts running rough in idle traffic. but once going its fine.

make sure the lower rad hose is not collapsing causing low water flow

I have the resline manifold which has those coolant lines plumbed back into the thermostat housing. Ill give a read on the temps and see if it is the gauge reading wrong but the car when in stop start does want to die until ive given it alittle bit of a run? Maybe the carbs are getting too hot im not sure?

So i am getting a reading of about 65 on the top of thermostat housing and 75 at the bottom the radiator is reading about 80 there is flow through the hoses and none are closing and the gauge is sitting at 3/4 which is alot higher than it used to?

Assuming you have a thermostat rated @ 82degC those readings are fine if not a little low.
Try reading the actual Coolant gauge sensor on the side of the head and comparing it to what the gauge indicates.
You might have a new "normal" temperature :?

I bought one of these from eBay recently as I wasn't sure how hot my Hilux was actually getting in relation to the gauge:

As it turned out, quite hot. But at least I now know when to start getting worried. It was about $38 posted, so it is an alternative to what Nissanman suggested.
