Hi guys! Just joined ozdat. I bought a 1978 120Y station wagon beginning of July as a 20th birthday present to myself. I've started fixing it up but I've come across an issue. The standard 4speed I'm just not comfortable with and I'd like to convert it to a 5speed. I know datsun did make a 5speed gearbox called a 60series (having a mind blank here) and finding a datsun gearbox has been a pain so my question is. Are there any Nissan gearboxes that would fit the datsun. Have just the standard A12 engine. Cheers guys

Welcome :)

The 120Y has an A-series motor, and five-speed gearboxes are available, however they are not especially common or cheap. You could put a wanted ad up here or at datsun1200.com and you may have some luck. In the mean time, put some photos up or start a build thread! 120Y wagons are cool.

because wagons are heavy cruisers for a datto :) you best get used to 4 sp
as its simple and prob get a 3.7 ratio for a h165 diff for slight better cruising.
5 speed will not make it go faster but an L series with 5 speed will :P
alternatively an R16 homer early 70s block with SSS R16 411 head
and H20 crank, rods and pistons will give you the nicest big capacity
pushrod 4 cyl engine Nissan could have made but went OHC

Sorry about the late reply. Put the dato into storage but recently got it back into the garage. I'd like to keep the car as original as possible. I was reading on the datsun1200 forum that it's possible to put a corolla 5speed gearbox onto the original a12 engine. I'm mainly looking for comfort with the vehicle as I would like to build it into a daily. Also on the datsun1200 forum, sikyne i believe he called himself kept the original a12 engine and put a second hand skyline turbo onto it. Keeping everything else stop (this is somewhat the direction I'm looking for. Only wanting a smaller output of HP and torque, even to get it up and boogy as the 50HP motor is too sluggish for my liking). But keeping the a12 is a definite as everyone goes for a a14 or a complete swap. I've decided to try the original engine for originality and personal interest. Thoughts?

Will post up a build tread once parts come along and I've found more space to store the datsun

Better off just putting a14 in it.

Sikyne has the tools and skills to do it. If you contact him bhes always happy give info.
Or if you are in Vic go see him.

Personally I'd just put an L series in it, get it engineered and enjoy. No huge power house but the torque increase wakes them up for fun and towing.

Just done my second L into B chasis (some one did all the fab one the first one). Cheapest way get a 5 speed into them
