I've wanted to get my hands on one of these for a while now (well... really a coupe, but they're stupid expensive) so when I found one that seemed to have a straight body I jumped at it.

Home sweet home

Found some surface rust

[ img ]IMG_20170414_150736 by jones_fli, on Flickr

and some not-so-surface rust

The thing didn't run very well when I got it and I narrowed it down to a problem with the original Hitachi carburetor. From a bit of research I determined it was not worth repairing, so I bought a cheap Chinese copy of a Weber 38/38 Outlaw DGES and made up an adapter bracket on my lathe.

I couldn't believe it, but as soon as I got it bolted down the thing fired right up and settled into a low, but steady idle! I tuned it as best I could according to the instructions but then noticed there was a hose not connected to anything which was causing a huge vacuum leak. I'm hoping once that's blocked off I'll be able to get it dialed in much better.

I've since started painting some of the interior black

I've now found the tank has a lot of rust inside it (no holes though, luckily) and the fuel lines seemed to be blocked. I've made a replacement feed line and bought a KBS kit for de-rusting the fuel tank and plan to do that over the next few weeks. Once that's done the thing should be running well enough for rego.

Plans for the car are to fix the rust, paint it gloss black, bolt all the chrome back onto it, tint the windows, lower it on some nice wheels and enjoy.

(maybe a manual conversion at a later date if I find the bits cheap... or maybe a crazy engine swap of some kind, that seems to be how all my cars go)

Nice one! I WISH mine was a coupe so badly, but they're so damned expensive.

The fuel tank is being de-rusted and painted with the KBS system and I'll be reinstalling it next week along with a new 5/16" fuel line. Hopefully that's all the car needs to run reliably, then I just need to fix the rust, reassemble the interior and whack it on historic rego. I'm getting sick of not driving this thing!

The more I research on black paint the more I'm considering a really dark green instead. I am a bit nervous about it showing every single imperfection on the car, and I don't want to spend my entire life block sanding the body before paint... but it would look SO good in black with super dark tint...

My dad painted a 1600 we used to drive black and yeah, we regretted it after a while as every single imperfection came out. Avoid it unless you have serious coin or ability to do a very, very good panel job

Black cars are the WORST
Every single chip
every single scratch

Just leave them parked inside and they get dirty.

im happy for other people to have black cars because they look cool AF.

but i never will.

Mmmm I have owned a black car in the past and swore I never would again... but black is THE colour that this would look good in. Any other suggestions? I want something sinister looking, probably going to go 15% tint all round.

If the car is fun to drive and looks good I'll probably end up doing some ridiculous engine swap.

Mmm that does look pretty good. Do you have a paint code for that colour?

I just put the new black carpet in the car (230 carpet is close enough to 330 carpet that it fits pretty well).

I've had a chance to work on the car this past weekend and managed to get patch panels put in on the front of the bonnet and the lower front parts of the sills. I still have to weld up the small holes in the front guards and the doors but the major rust repairs are well underway.

I had a couple of issues when I moved the car which have cropped up just from it sitting for 8 months:

1. The brakes don't work at all. The pedal goes straight to the floor with minimal resistance.
--- I think this is probably a sign of a stuffed master cylinder, as it doesn't look like any of the calipers or wheel cylinders are leaking. I'll try bleeding it next weekend, but I fear I'm in for a new master cylinder.
--- Does anyone know if the 260z master cylinder the same as the 260c?

2. My dubious quality Chinese Weber 38/38 DGES seems to be blocked up or not adjusted properly.
--- The car idles fine, but any throttle whatsoever causes it to make this wheezing noise from the carby and it dies.
--- Little tiny 1% throttle blips were possible without dying, in order to get the car to move, but any more than that and it would fall on its face.
--- I suspect the float height is not set correctly. I've found a few guides on the net but I'm not sure if the Chinese version is identical

Anyway, up next weekend is to fix the carby issue, fix the remaining rust, paint the door jams, put the carpet in... that's probably all I'll have time for TBH haha

Well I've decided to take the plunge and paint the car black.

I'll be doing a closed door respray, so for the moment I've scuffed up the door jams and door inners and spraybombed them with epoxy anti-rust paint. I've only done one side but I have to say it turned out really well. The black may not match the outside of the car perfectly, but I don't have space to fully disassemble this thing and do a full respray. I doubt anyone will be able to notice that it's not the exact shade of black, I'll be painting the outside with standard jet black acrylic.

The car also didn't come with mirrors so I've installed a couple of fender mirrors I bought on ebay. I'm not 100% sold on how they look, but I think when the car is all black they will fit in much better.

The carby issue appears to be the accelerator pump is not doing anything. Hopefully the jet is just blocked from sitting so long. I'll disassemble the carby over Christmas and clean it all out. Hopefully that, along with a new brake master, will be all it needs mechanically to get up and boogie!

Small update, just disassembled thE carby and flushed it all out with carby cleaner. The accel pump now works perfectly and the car is driveable (without brakes). Once a new master cylinder goes back in hopefully that's the last serious mechanical thing it needs before I can get some rego... once the rust is fixed, of course

Another minor update - the brakes are fixed and the boot has been thoroughly de-rusted and painted (roughly). Still need to fix the rust in the doors and finish the sills, then it's off to paint.

I've been focusing on helping my girlfriend with her car over the past few weeks. She bought a 1976 Corona MX23 Coupe which needed a bit of work, but it's just been painted so now the Datto can get some lovin.

Any updates on this?

Mine's black too, fully restored, tinted windows and B45's Simmons.
