Took the Datto into work the other day, below is a vid of her in the basement carpark - gotta love the noise of this car in basements and tunnels!

Gave a few guys a ride and the little L20B just pulled like a freight train with the car fully loaded like it was no trouble at all. This L20B is a strong little engine with the dual Weber carbs

But to be honest the ride home in warm weather was bloody terrible. Bumper-to-bumper traffic for literally an hour and 20 minutes was uncomfortable as hell with no air-con. Nerve wracking too with one eye permanently fixed on the temperature and oil pressure gauge. Shattered my nostalgia of driving around in Datsuns on my P-Plates in the summertime! Modern cars really do make you quickly forget how much better they are in terms of comfort than old cars.

Still massive ups to the PWR radiator, SPAL fan and Craig-Davies water pump. When I got her home I left the ignition on and she cooled down in literally 2 minutes in the garage. I would never restore an old car without installing a modern cooling system for the engine.

Lesson learned from this experience is I'll ever be making this car a daily driver!

New rules for H and M plates that came into effect about 18 months ago. If you modify a car beyond what was a factory option then it must be subjected to a VASS report which requires an engineer from VicRoads to assess the vehicle.

In our case the L20B and a 5 speed gearbox meant it had to get an engineers report.

It's a good idea I think, it stops idiots putting stupidly powerful engines in old cars disguised as H plated vehicles and forces them to have an independent umpire in VicRoads assess the vehicle rather than your mechanic just RWC'ing it.

The other reason is it brings Victoria inline with other states. If you took an SR20 powered Datto interstate to NSW under H plates the cops could, if they wanted to, take your car off the road and demand it be M plated - if they knew what they were looking at of course.

Fair enough, your diligence is impressive! wouldnt be too many M plated L bangers getting around. Did you find the engineer easy to deal with? Back in the day i used the infamous (relaxed) sunjay but i dont think hes around any more. I want to play around with my 1000 wagon and might 'need' an engineers cert.

I got my mechanic (Frank who runs APS in Frankston) to handle this side of it. Apparently the VASS guy is a bit troublesome to deal with as all the shops in Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula have to book him a few weeks in advance as he is so busy. This means the shops have to ensure all the cars needing inspection are ready and if there is anything wrong you won't get your cert and any arguments to the contrary are not entertained!

My only drama was the VASS guy used the number on the compliance plate fixed to the firewall for the certificate, my mechanic however used the number stamped on the chassis - which is actually correct according to the current rules, you have to use the number stamped on the body as compliance plates are easily swapped around. When I presented this to VicRoads they said bizarrely said go back and get the RWC redone with the number on the VASS!!! I didn't argue this point though and just got it done so I could get the plates, VicRoads people in Seaford seem to have NFI about the rules either so I just worked within the parameters I was dealt with to get it done!!

Long story short, if you're gonna do an engine swap in your 1000 you're gonna need a VASS cert if you want club plates that is for sure

After obtaining an engineers and RWC as a 2.0 on my car 5 years ago, and then fronting up to the RTA with all required documents. I was told that I would have to x stamp all my original numbers. Bullshit! I told them. After arguing with them for around half an hour, the RTA officer decided that she would contact the ombudsman for authority and clarification in order to pass my car. She was asked if it was a Datsun 510 and after confirming that it was. She was promptly told that the numbers were not to be altered as it is a historical vehicle.

Minor update.

Driving the hell out of the little Blue Beast at the moment. The reconditioned R160 diff is going well. The acceleration is less manic but the motor has so much torque that it stills goes pretty quick, the pull from 3000 is really, really good. The other benefit is the speedo is now correct!

Motor seems to have loosened up a bit too, the car seems to spin with a bit more freedom although I am wondering if a new starter motor is in order, sometimes it struggles trying to crank it over when cold.

Do need a new project though, was thinking of a 180B....

Whoa... impressive!

I keep having this feeling of wanting a new project and then realising only so many funds, only so much room and only so much time... Damn it.

Hey all

Got an issue with the tacho, is there some specialist mechanic "black magic" that can spin this back around to the right side of the pin or do I need to pull it out and start fiddling with it?

Stuffed if I know!! What I do remember is seeing it bounce a bit while driving and then spin back around the other way

A rep at the company said it may have happened due to a power spike....

I had similar issue with my compliance plate stamped number and the one the engineer used as body stamped number has an extra letter.
Lucky an old-timer at VicRoads was there. He confirmed it's right car.

Well the tacho fixed itself somehow..... and then it went back the other way again! I must have some weird electrical surge thing going on, not enough to fry it though. I am putting it down to a "characteristic" of the car!

In other news this happened on a drive to melbourne the other week

The screws holding the rocker cover down had loosened and the end result the gasket just forced its way under pressure out coating the engine bay and even the back of the car in a shitload of oil

Lucky I had stopped to go into a shop and noticed the sizeable puddle under the car - I really need some kind of oil pressure warning light - the car has the factory one but I don't think it is all that good!

Anyway new gasket from Bursons was installed
