Its not "that" wild !! I have one in my daily driver. :D
L18 72deg Cam, twin 1/34 SU's , "42mm Intake ports".
3speed Jatco with shift kit&high-stall. 4.87 R180 diff

It still pulls good from down low. (3000rpm+)
I would hate to think what a 74/76/78deg cam would be like tho! :o
Even less pull below 3000rpm!

But she does have a awesome lumpy burble at idel.

oh and fr3ak!
if you want a cam bigger than a 72 I would look at webers bigger than 40mm. Sorry to burst your bubble dude but 40's aint gonna cut it with anything like a 74. You might aswell just have a 72 and make use of the cam, rather than "overcam" your car.

Like i said: "i'll put the engine together (so i can finally drive it for once) and see what i get"

If it doesn't go properly, i'll make changes to make it go properly...

Yes it sounds like double handling, but i'd rather be able to hear the car start, than to see it sitting in the shed.

 Word to yo Mama!

Get the bugger going, then make your "improvements".

If you can't find a genuine Datrally manifold, Baz sells one that looks suspiciously similar.

Cheers,

Just a bit better machining.

Well if you could be bothered getting on Baz's web site here and here you would know all about it....

Also,

I paid about $190 for 4 x L28 86mm flat tops with rings about 18 months ago.

Cheers,

Mmm.. flat top pistons. Unfortunately i need something better than pump fuel to run those babies in mine!

$190 sounds good. Where from?

They should be OK on good PULP (Mobil) if you're using an A87 on an L18. Compression should be about 9.5:1 at a good guess. I built a nice lil' L18 with 87mm flat tops and a modfied 210 closed chambered head (37cc chambers). It had more compression than what you're building and ran fine on unadulterated super.

As for where I got 'em...hmm... I think it was a piston place in Bayswater, Vic. Can't remember their name, tho.

Cheers,

I've been told by Datsun Experts that flat top 86mm L28 pistons will be too high, compression wise, to run on 98 octane. They recommend the dished ones. Apparently these dished pistons in a stock L18 SSS give 10.3:1 compression. I don't want to imagine what the flat tops give...

Plus my head is shaved.

Chrome-dome!

The dished pistons are certainly safe, but I can't see then hitting anywhere near 10.3:1. You'd have to have tiny combustion chambers.

It'd pay to have the head you're using "cc"d to ensure that they're all the same size, get the thickness of the headgasket you'll be using and finally the size of the dish in the pistons. You'll then be able to work out your CR fairly well.

Cheers,
