I've got a few odd questions that I haven't found PROVEN answers to yet, so...

1) Baz mentioned on a recent thread that the J-series was based on the BMC B-series. Is the L-series based off another engine too? I have heard it was based off a diesel (WTF?), but have no idea how true that is.

2) The ACL piston catalogue lists the Z20 and Z20S as having different piston heights. Is this a mistake, or does that mean they have different length rods? If so, how long are they?

3) Z22S & Z20S - what does the 'S' stand for?

Cheers for any help,

Beef.

Beef, I think the L series beginning as a diesel is a myth.
This may be due to the LD20 diesel engine.

Note that the FJ20 has the same main bearing size as most L series.

The exception is the L20B which has larger main journals.
The Diesel crank is identical to the L20B in all respects except that its forged from different material.
The LD20 may be the reason for this myth.

As for the Z Qs I would need to check on this.
May be due to passenger vs Truck engines or country of manufacture.
In the early days "S" refered to single, as in L18S & L18T.
Single carb & twin carb as in SSS.

will see what I can find or pehaps someone can enlighten us.

Cool. Thanks Baz.

The Z stuff is a bit odd isn't it?

FWIW, the ACL catalogue says the Z22 & Z22S were both introduced in '82. The Z22S being used in the Cabstar and 720. The Z22 being used in the Cabstar, 720, Bluebird, King Cab, Skyline & 200SX.

I have no idea of how true any of that is. I've never heard of a Z22 200SX before!!

I knew the S didn't stand for Supercharger!!

Thanks again.
