when you say ignition module do you mean the computer to run the ignition?? or the actual dissy??

If Microtech don't recommend one in their documentation then Autronic do: Bosch PN BIM137. Not cheap brand new.

I believe, I stand to be corrected, that an electronic ignition module provides the power to the coil to charge it so that this power doesn't have to come directly from the computer itself.

So it goes something like this?

1a. Computer reads a sensor so it knows where the engine is
1b. The ignition module is charging the coil at most times.
2. When the computer decides its time to fire something, it triggers the ignition module which closes a circuit to the coil and dumps the voltage to whatever.

Where is PL when you need him?

That bits right i can confirm that, i believe once the electro magnet field thingmeabob in the coil loses (circuit is opened) its power it send the pulse through to the dissy

but i would have thought the computer needs to power the coil so there is some control of when power is on and off,

also when you guys say ignition module are you referring to the microtech being only fuel??

i could have my wires crossed, no pun intended

That is an ignition module. I thiiiink its just like an overgrown relay. The computer talks to it so it doesn't have to be routing large amounts of current, it just tells the ignition module what to do on its behalf.

PETE! Help us.

I believe that inside most of them are simply a FET, which is just a type of transistor that can switch big loads, so yeah, like a solid state relay.

so for instance if i bought a Mega Squirt and Spark i would also need an addional "ignition module" if thats the case then in theory, the ignition module would run the power for the coil and the ecu would tell it when it open and close the circuit

:nervous:

someone put us out of our mysery :)

I have wired an FJ turbo with LT8. Had the same problem as you Tones - we went down to the local wrecking yard and scavenged a coil and transistor (igniter if you wish) from a VL Commodore (garden variety RB30) - it worked a treat! This particular FJ makes mid 180rwkw all standard except for 15 PSI.

yeah the ignition module is simply a transistor or a FET. Nothing fancy, I got a s/hand one form a VL commonwhore. Works fine and cost $5.
