Hey all,
Just a quick one - do the timing marks on an L series start at 5deg ATDC, or start at TDC? I was mucking about with timing on the weekend and pushed it up to 18deg instead of the normal 13 I run it at and it seemed to enjoy it alot more! Didnt run it for long enough to see if the temp was rising though and as the muffler sits 40mm above the rocker cover you would never hear it ping...

anyway - Im assuming that the timing marks are:
-5 0 5 10 15

Cheers
Rivmasta

System A
On the crank pulley, the last mark (the most anti-clockwise looking at the front of the engine) is TDC.
Then there are, moving clockwise, marks at 5, 10, 15 & 20 deg. advanced.
System B
If the crank pulley has only one mark, then that is crank TDC and there should be a graduated plate bolted to the front timing cover.
This system works in reverse to that described above.
The most anti-clock mark is 20 Deg adv, then 15, 10 ,5 & 0.
It is just a matter of identifying which system you have and interpreting the marks correctly.

If by some lucky circumstance you have a graduated plate AND several marks on the crank pulley, you will need to decide which system you want to use and remove the offending bits. :?

Thanx Graeme,

Im on System A as per your description. I think the elec dizzy might need a rebuild as it has heaps more balls mid range when its better set at 18deg at idle (900rpm).

Oh well - I planned to get the dizzy recurved anyway!

Cheers,
Garry.
