My FJ20 half died the other day...

Was going through the gears into 3rd....Put the loud pedal down and engine fluttered like it had no fuel...from then it start to cough and splutter and every time I went to accelerate it would act like it was running super lean..You know when an engine gets that big flutter in it...Heaps of air but no fuel to burn..anyway..it died...Managed to get it started again but it seems to be running on only number 4cyl...

Have checked spark...Ok

Pulled plug lead one at a time with effect on engine except for number 4 which made the engine die...

Engine running very very rough...

Checked fuel ressure and pumps and fuel lines...OK

Engine runs an old LINK EMS which uses a water temp sensor and MAP only..

Checked vacumme lines...OK

Any clues anyone????? Haven't checked to see if injectors are pulsing yet....

Well I've had a good look and noticed that the main pump sounded like it was sucking in a bit of air....So.....

After checking around it seems that the lift pump to the surge tank is to small as it's not keeping the tank full and hence, the tank is running dry...Well thats what it appears to be currently..So I'll look into a higher flowing pump to fill the surge tank and see what happens cause I manualy filled the tank by disconnecting the main pump and priming the lift pump and afterwards the car ran fine now that it had a nice full surge tank to draw from........

will keep you posted...

Make sure your return line from the engine goes back into the surge tank and not the main tank. Otherwise you will have the pumps trying to out pump each other.

Problem solved.

A combination of dirty fuel filter and crapy lift pump.

I now have 2 inline filters before the new (PN: FEP-136) lift pump.

The old lift pump worked but was a pretty noisy pump so I thought, "stuff it" and bought a better lift pump which sounds more like the main pump as its a similar style.

All is now good....I can drive the car again... :D

Thanks for the reply's....
