yeah pretty much, but changing synth less often and just changing the filter religiously every 5thou will give you the best of both worlds.

I don't know enough about the specific chemistry involved but this is my understanding...

Most engine oils are made from a base oil and have additives put in them to improve 'oil performance' at the place of production. These additives include Viscosity Modifiers, Antiwear Additives, Degergents/Dispersants and Corrosion Inhibitors. These additives can be both mineral or synthetic and contain both acids and bases (alkalines).

The advantage of synthetic oils is that they have a lower level of imperfections in the molecular structures and therefore can deal with higher temperatures and pressures (or shear stress).

I don't know if synthetic oils have a large amount of strong bases but I don't see the benifit to the oil manufactures to make an oil that should be changed less often... wouldn't that mean they are doing themselves out of profit?

IMHO, syntheic oils are worth every cent.

oh and i agree whole heartedly, nothing beats a good synthetic oil, and everything you've said is 100% correct - i just don't change it as often, preferring to change the filter instead up to 60thou intervals.
i've never had a problem in both my A series and L series engines doing this...over-revving maybe, but not infrequent oil changes

note if your engine is burning a bit of oil you will need to change the oil more often, because petrol is more corrosive again which would get passed to the oil in blow-by.

geezus this is an old thread!!! 8)
