I've got a turbo with shaft play (touches compessor housing) and I think it'll need to be rebuilt. Can anyone tell me roughly what it would set me back? I'm not really looking to get it done soon, but It'd be nice to know.

cheers,

Tyrie

It really depends on the turbo mate. Ring a turbo shop (can't recommend one sorry). I know Mad1600 was thinking of buying a rebuild kit for his dad's GT17 (OEM Saab), around USD140 I think.

What motor is it for? (what flange to suit)

There are heaps of second hand good turbo's on the market. I've seen S15 T28bb's go for as little as $300.

My mate got his T3/4 done recently for his FJ, got both housings bored out and bigger compressor and exhaust wheels, cost $900 all up I think.

lol I dont know that either, I was told its a T3 flange so I went and bought a T3 (vg20) but it wasnt! I've got the original turbo now, It is unknown to me, but the whole setup (custom suck through on A14) is made around this turbo so unless i can find an Identical one I dont want to change it.

here's some pics:

Thats a TO4 flange.

Most T3 are internally gated, not necessitating an external wastegate.

Amongst others yes. Most TO4 inlet flange turbos these days are monsters. Atleast I think they are. Most are far too big for non-drag 4-cyl L's. Example, the GT3582R is still a T3 flange, TO4 flanged garrets don't start until the 700hp GT4088R.

Try to find a manafold and turbo that match from a wrecker eg sss automotive or just jap....
dont quote me on it but that turbo looks to be a hybrid possible t3/4....... t3 comp housing and t4 exhaust housing thus the t4 flange...

my mate just got a t25g off a 95 180sx for $450
t4 is big and means heaps of lag something like t25g would come on boost heaps quicker and be alot more drivable on the road.... assuming thats what you want....
May be a better option for similar money to rebuilding that one???

man its easier and cheaper to just weld on a new flange to suit whatever turbo your after. say a t28 flange/gasket and studs shouldnt set you back much more than $50-60, then just weld.

i would personally go with nothing bigger than a T28. You can find them anywhere - but you need carbon seals fitted or it will smoke like a MoFo.

cant believe people fit t3 or t4 to an A-series motor. Boost wouldnt kick in to probably redline

yeah but I'd have to change more than the flange, i'd have to change the inlet bit to mount the carb, the exhaust bit to mount the exhaust, the pipe from compressor to inlet manifold etc... i might as well start from scratch.

I'm going to bolt it all together and see how/if it runs and then look at rebuildng it.

Its not a particularly big turbo i dont think, but I have no idea when it would hit boost... yet
