G'day,

Jason here. Purchased a Datsun 1600 recently and finding it needs more work then I had anticipated, I have chosen to keep the car and restore it.

Worse than I expected, I need a driver's door urgently (with everything included) and when the time comes, I will worry about the other 3. The bonnet is in putty ready to be sanded back and painted, but I fear that it was repaired too dodgily to be used. I plan to get good panels and fix up any dents or blemishes, especially any rust. When the body is completely straight, I will be giving the car a full bare-metal paintjob.

As for running gear, it sports a pretty worked L20B with twin side draught Solex carbies and a 5spd gearbox which has close ratio 1,2,3 and 4th gears. An LSD of some kind is fitted to the car, and it has genuine 13 inch datsun rims of some kind. The dash is dead, the interior needs work. It keeps getting jammed in 2nd gear, so I'm guessing I need a new gearbox :(

I am not sure about the engine exactly, but I'm pretty sure it has been rebuilt using strong parts and has a cam of some kind.

It has disc brakes on the rear, not sure about suspension, I think just some crappy shocks and springs. The tacho is jumpy and the speedometer is in MPH so I am getting an aftermarket KPH speedo and a new tacho if possible.

If anyone wants to be a part of this project, give me a yell as I am just learning and I am not the most mechanically qualified at the moment. I am a pre-apprentice mechanic at the moment so hopefully I will pick up some handy tips.

Anyway, enough of this. Here are some current photos.

Thanks for listening to my story -

Regards,
Jason

Errr there was a steel plate there but I had my first accident (if you can call it that) within 3 hours of owning the car. Tree stump went through the door.

Learnt my lesson. Anyway I'm doing my pre-app at Carlisle TAFE.. Beattie are you NOR (north-of-river) spec? Maybe you can give me a hand.

It's not matt black paintjob. It's crappy black done in about 10 minutes. Bonnet is straight as ready to be sanded back and painted. It's putty, not primer or white paint :P

Anyone who wants to lend a hand, I'm all for it.

Why can't people just attach photo's :?:
It isn't that hard.

No I won't be downloading another program just to view photo's.

Dial up at home, too slow, and we are not allowed to download every program available at work.

Beattie came to have a look at my car today. Helped me push it when it ran outta petrol too! What a top bloke. Think i sourced myself some doors and panels, with other bits too.

Will keep you guys updated, but Beattie informs me I need a new fan belt :x

Yeah but it's still got to be driveable, because otherwise, no Datsun cruises!

Anyway I got until October to get it all running well.

Forgot to add. Need new brake pads on rear, but rotors are fine, fronts will need new pads not sure on rotor wear though.

I got some armorall and polish from a car detailer so I'm going to try and get the interior to come up nice, then polish all the chrome bits on the car. I'll take pics if it comes up good 8)

Didn't come up too good, but I worked on the car all day and I'm very proud and happy of my achievements.

Got my side indicators installed but they need new wiring to be connected up.
Put my new tire on so all good tires. Inspected brake rotors all good just new pads needed. Armorall didnt do sh*t. Fixed my right rear indicator which wasn't working. Mucked around and figured out how to remove a fan belt. New one was wrong size so need to get a shorter one exchanged with it and I'll chuck that on.

Next step is install new fan belt, thermostat, flush cooling system and replace all my lubricants and my oil filter!

My 'good' tire that I just put on has a puncture/leak, as I've just found out. :(
