I was chasing a 4.6 R180 diff with no luck. Ended up buying a Nissan 720 4WD front diff 4.6 ratio at a wrecker - bolts straight in. Might be the quickest and easiest option if you have wreckers nearby.

Yeah, my 4.8 is out of the front of a 720. You'd think it's never been put in 4WD, looks brand new.
Luckily I found this one on ebay, local wreckers wanted $500+. Though one wrecker I rang up sent his 720 to the crusher with the front diff still in it, said he couldn't off load it!
What's the 4.6 like on the highway in 4th or 5th? I'm about 45 mins out of Newcastle (if the missus is with me  ) so I'd prefer not to rev the date off it for extended periods, if I just feel like a krooz.

Nah wasn't me Dave. I don't think I've made the trip into town in the datto this year actually, just been fangin' around the bay disturbing the peace  . I haven't seen another white one in the Newy area yet, but I've seen a sweet black or dark blue 1600 getting Ramo' a couple of times a little while ago. I've got the feeling it's got an FJ in it.

On another note, I wussed out and got a mechanic to install the cam. When it came out, he found a broken valvespring, AHHHHH! So I've got a set of Performance Springs RR4's in the post. This means that the head has to come off so I need a new head gasket. Because of the 88mm bore, I have two options: Nismo @ $250ish  or a Z24/L20 Frankenstien Jobbie. I'm going to try the cheaper option, and with the change I've ordered an ARP headstud kit. The head bolts looked like they were getting a little long in the tooth anyway.
So, my "little gouge" in the cam has turned into roughly $650 in parts, before gaskets. Luckily I have a very understanding better half, well, more of an eye rolling one!
I figure it's better to spend a bit (Lot) of extra money now and get it done right, rather than half arse my way out of it and hope it works

Who are you getting the work done threw ?

And also im interested in getting a head stud kit, did you get it htrew your mechanic or someone else & how much was it ? I feel i would be better off putting studs in insted or standard ones in my warm 2L.

Cheers,
Stephen.

OK, just curious as I saw a really nice 1600 (looked very similar to your photos) as I was taking the kids to a party at the model train park at Glendale. By the time we found a park, got the kids organised and tried to find the owner of the 1600, he'd also parked and disappeared into the crowd.

I got a Nismo headgasket from here - http://www.wolfcreekracing.com/classified.htm - US$55, plus postage. Worked out well under AU$100, and took less than a week to arrive.

Had a look at http://www.wolfcreekracing.com/classified.htm but they don't have any available. They've got some cool stuff there though, like the NOS L20b blocks and cranks.
I'm happy to try this Z/L gasket for now though, the cut isn't made in a critical area.
Let you's know how it goes anyway, hopefully by next weekend.

Finally the car is going again, and go it does!
There may have been some accidental torching of tyres from the bottom of third, around a round-a-bout!
The cam gives a good shove in the back from much earlier on, but still revs out above 7K :D
So now my wallet is wimpering from the raping it recieved, but it's great to have a running datto again.
Now, what's people's opinions on running fully synth motor oil?

Mine revs about 3400rpm at 100km/h but this is just off idle with a rotary! Obviously depends on gear ratio and tyre size. Use this calculator to work out speed at particular revs. I used this before deciding 4.6 was the best option for me.

The blokes I know use Castrol 10-60 Racing synthetic. Around $85 for a 5 litre bottle. One bloke sells his sponsor's racing spec oil, and spends the cash buying the Castrol product.
We use it for Rallying and Hilclimbing. Dont leave it in forever. Replace it after 3 months, even if the engine isn't used often.

I used to use HPR30 in my 2.0L l18
Nissco use Penrite in all their cars, and with Randy having worked in the industry as long as he has, that is good enough for me
