Jbwetzels, how much power do you want to make?
If you're just going to lightly boost it a bit, just rebuild it to stock specs with tougher pistons. L-bangers are tough, they don't need studs and everything replaced like a Chev or SR20 :)
Thehelix is claiming that ARP stuff should be all through the bottom end but if you want just a mild 250-300hp I'd just stick with stock bottom end. you've got plenty of capacity on your side. thehelix wants more power than that so he is preparing his enigne as appropriate.

well the stud kits were ARP

I am hoping to get somewhere in the 500hp area, running about 15-20psi

i am getting the compression taken down to 8:1 or 8.5:1

ARP rod bolts would be the best money spent. Those bolts are a weak link in the bottom end and should be replaced when rebuilding anyway.

If you can, get some 280zx turbo bolts (with a 13 on the top). They are a better bolt than the L20 standard.

I guess you are planning on running AVGAS to reach 500hp ?

which turbo bolts are you talking about?

i was planning on continuing to make HP on pump gas until i could not go on anymore

98RON on it's own is only good for about 400hp.

Aaron,

How do you figure that?

just from cars i've seen, talked to the owners etc etc.

roughly 400hp at the engine seems to be the limit of 98RON running street cars. i've seen it in a 13B turbo RX2 (410hp), and S5 RX7 (450hp with octane booster), turbo 202 torana (98 and 15psi makes 380hp, 98+octane booster+25psi makes 460hp), an SR20DET powered stanza (385hp) to name the recent ones.

it just seems that people have a bit of trouble getting over this figure on pump fuel. maybe it's the quality of the fuel coming out of the bowser though, but you can't get 98 any other way!

i'm only reporting what i've witnessed and what seems to be a recurring trend, so if someone has an exception to the rule then hey i'm not going to dispute it.

did it make that 1000rwhp on pump fuel alone?

or can it run at lower boost pressures on pump fuel for the "street"?

it was 1000rwkw i am pretty sure it was pump alone and also someone said you cant get 98ron alone

does'nt BP Ultimate promise 98ron

wait a minute - 1000 rear wheel KILOWATTS? as in 1 megawatt?

that's like 1300kw at the engine - maybe up to 1500kw depending on the driveline. is this eddy tassone's car?

Aaron,

Ummm.. the octane rating of the fuel doesn't limit the `hp' you can get out of it. It is merely a factor in determining the detontation threshold, just like air-temp, ignition timing, exhaust valve temperature, compression ratio, etc etc.

The easiest (?) of these to work with on forced induction is the air-temperature. An investment in a big intercooler and/or large turbo will help get the inlet temps down and push the detonation threshold upwards.

FYI Simon DeGroot's turbo L28 made 244rwkw on 17psi on pump fuel I believe.

like i said, it's just going from people i've talked to.

the most power i've ever had is 217rwhp in my RX7 so i wouldn't know personally about big power figures.

maybe around 400hp seems the limit because of the size of intercoolers they have to use to keep the car for street use...?

dunno :?:

i'll shut up now.
