Just a quick update on my car. I have been in the states/europe for 4 months now, and have just got a lease on a place in Laguna Beach for the next year. In that time I plan on, once again, accumulating parts to improve the car when I get back.

I have a line on bare struts as the basis for custom uprights to go under it, and will be purchasing an appropriate brake setup later on (big calipers front and rear, dual m/c).

I can't remember if I mentioned it but I pulled the sump after oil pressure issues to find half my bearings floating around at the bottom, so a rebuild is in order. This will depend on how much money I have available, so I won't talk much about it yet.

Other things on my shopping list include:

5-point harness
Seat
Jerico 4-speed Gearbox
Triple-plate clutch and custom alu flywheel
3.36:1 and 3.54:1 R200 crown and pinion wheels (to go in my existing 2 4.375:1 R200 LSDs)
Rod ends and tubing to make proper adj control arms
Bigger injectors
Alu for a custom intake manifold
Lexan

And so it goes on. Anything I've forgotten?

I was thinking a cage would be a good thing to have too...

I agree, but its not the sort of thing I can buy and store in the shed until I get back. Once I'm there the car will be getting a tear down, some body work, cage, and rebuild. Goal is to have as much of the stuff ready to put back on as is possible.

Speaking of which, does anyone know much about welding ChroMo?

Dave,

V8 supercar roll cages use something called racetech 650 (or something spanky like that), which is actually 4130 tubing. I've watched them get tig welded before. They don't use pre-heat.

I was never invloved in that part of it, so I don't know the specs. If you look up tig welding of 4130 on the net, I'm sure you'll find plenty. Here's a free one:

Also: did you ever find out what caused your engine to lose pressure?

Why don't you just gut the stock one and pop in Hollinger sequential cogs? :)

Beef,

Thats good to know. I had heard all sorts of stories like them treating the whole car after it has been welded and what not. 4130 it is, and I'll get to researching.

Re oil pressure, I haven't been withint 5000km of the car since it died, so no I haven't found anything.

Zac,

I think it would take a lot of work for any stock-based box to get to the level of a race-developed transmission. But if you wanted to prove me wrong? :)

That turbo oil pump in the rebuild list?

Hehe.. not really, I'm just stupid and start out with pieces of crap without realising it. L16 oil pump on a turbo L28 with oil cooler anyone? Friggin POs, and stupid me for not realising.

I don't think any of us get it all right first time around Dave, it just depends on what the mistakes are and their consequences. Thats the thing with a big project like yours, as someone said to me, you are your own engineer, fabricator, designer, quality controller etc etc. If that isn't tough well.................

Ain't that the truth.. still, the learning as you go is great fun (if expensive).

So I've done some research on 4130 welding, anything up to 3mm wall thickness doesn't require heat treating, so a cage will be fine. I've also got a mate lined up to TIG it together for me. Oh and so its here and I don't forget: you can TIG 4130 onto mild plate steel for the bases of the cage.

So that will be on the list when I get back and can do some work on it. Concentrating on finding me the aforementioned money-tree at the moment.

Now I reckon I might go hunt down a FEA package and see about designing a nice stiff roll-cage. Anyone have access to the associated CAMS/FIA regs for roll cages? At some point I would like the car to be legal for sports sedans.
