well.. just the 12 months between updates...

Datsun is home. Paint is now all done. The shed has been updated for it's welcoming home..

Still having issues with these R31 struts and the offset / caliper clearance of my 14" rims... I've taken a bit of material off the back of the fronts to reduce the offset.. still have issues with the caliper clearance...

I might end up going back to the 200b struts... grrr. either that or i've gto some 16" SSRs that fit... but i kinda wanted to run 14s.. :(

If anyone knows a way to run the R31 struts and bring the mounting face in a bit.. i'd love to know..

Looking great Tom.
Can you name the painter? I need to look at getting my 68 SSS painted in the next year or so and am starting to look out for good painters.
Those R31 struts and breakes really suit larger rims or rims with alot of caliper clearance (like the stock 14" steelies).
The offset of your rims is not really ideal for those struts either which are happier with say a +30 to +40mm offset (think S13/TRX alloys) pending on width as the R31 strut pumps the hubs outward something like 1/4 of an inch each side.
Watanabe's are known for having little caliper clearance.
You can file/linish a little off the R31 caliper fins but at the end of the day id look at getting a brake combo that fits under those wheels in particular if thats really what u want to use.
You can try 200B brakes (single piston, solid rotor) but id look at something a little better like 240K brakes (twin piston, solid rotor), or even better 280zx (single piston caliper and vented rotor).
280zx struts will also bring your front wheels in closer to the engine allowing more guard lip clearance (pretty much opposite of what R31 struts do) and still have the vented rotors which are great for heat removal.
Youd have to check each of these on your chosen rims though to make sure they will fit.
I have some twin-piston 240k struts and brakes if you need to test fit those you are welcome to try them.
I was in a similar situation but managed to squeeze 13's and hubcaps over vented rotors that are larger than R31 rotors with a little research and the right rims...

Thanks Nick, to be honest, if i was to paint again I would pay a bit more and get a more reputable painter... Don't get me wrong, i got good value for money with the paint job, but now that it's done, I'm looking at any little defects..

I do have a set of 200B struts with new veradah rotors and BMW 7 series calipers on. The calipers need rebuilding... but i know my rims will fit on. I liked the idea of fitting the 14s under the datsport r31 struts, but i obviously didn't do enough research before getting them..

these are the 200B ones..

They are 14x6.5 +22 i think.

I'm struggling to fit them over the r31 brakes at the moment (they have spacers on in the pics)

they're for sale at the moment!! :)

So, progress has been a little slow, but taken it our for a few drives..

Had some electrical gremlins with the wiring for the early Microtech computer, but i'm pretty confident that it's now sorted..

Took it for a spin tonight and it drove well. It's quite satisfying seeing it improve as little bits and pieces are fixed. Still got the issues with the offset on the fronts. I've finished restoring my 16" SSRs and they should have some tyres on them before christmas.

Took a few pics tonight too:

still quite a few finishing touches to be done, but it brings a smile to my face.. :)

Cheers Anth.

Test fitted some old rubber on the new wheels, to check fit etc.

205/50/16 on the 16x8 rears.. i think the sizing is about right. The wheels are about a +38 and i've used a 20mm bolt on spacer on the rears.

Fronts have got a 195/45/16 on the 16x7.. no spacers. needed the high offset to bring the wheel in with the R31 struts. I think i'll go 195/50 or even 195/55 on the fronts.. and it needs to be lowered a bit more at the front.

The Datsport coilovers don't go anywhere near low enough in my opinion.. I think i'll get the springs reset. Hopefully with a bit more lowering, i'll get some natural camber in the front too.

What strut tops do you have?
Might be able to lower it slightly and add some neg camber with different tops perhaps?

I've got the complete R31 Datsport strut combo, inc strut top:
http://www.datsport.com/strut-dsk250C.html

I think i'll get some adjustable strut tops like these generic ones on ebay, http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/110782567064 ... 1438.l2649
they might reduce the height a bit too.

Car looks great BTW.
