Hey Fellas ive just blown the diff in my 1600, and wondering where to go from here. I can go about replacing the pinion and rebuild the whole thing but after all its only an R160. Ive spent the last hour searching the threads for answers and have deciphered this much:

1.To fit an R180 i may need to enlarge the moustache bar holes, but other than that my r160 axles will bolt straight up? Will I need to modify my Tailshaft also?

2. If an r180 eludes me, i understand i can rip an r160 out of an early model subaru (ie brumby? 4wd things?) And it should bolt straight up? Which model soobys are r160 lsd?

Basically my car is sitting in the carport with its ass in the air and i want to get it back on the road as quickly and effectively as possible. Obviously if i can fit an r180 without too many mods then i will go that route.

Just want some straight up answers from some learned datto tinkerers to get my own datto on the road once more! Help a brother out!

Cheers guys

subi diff needs new input flange.

i have changed from r160-r180's in and out no problems on my 16.
I blew 6 diffs in 7 days....

now i take it easy with a r160 welder which I need to replace with a lsd r180 or r200

Dont rebuild,
Just go to a wrecker and get a r180 diff from a 200b, I picked one up for 80 bucks

chris,
there are alot of subaru 4wd's at u-pullit with r160's.
Most are 3.7 ratio but some are 3.9:1.
You will need a special torx bit to undo the input shaft too aswell as change the tailshaft flange with your existing datto r160 diff.
Look for 1980 to 92 Subaru 4wd wagon and brumby utes.

R180's from old skylines and 240k's usually get snapped up quick due to being larger and usually stronger...

Thanks for the quick replys guys. Off to the wrecker i go, Nick where can i get one of these 'torx bits' to undo the input shaft? What is it?

So an r180 will simply bolt into the crossmember? All fits?

RX turbo. The ones shaped like a "Leone".

You need to change the tailshaft flange - the tailshaft would bolt onto the subi one as the holes are correctly spaced, but the subi flange is bigger in diameter and won't go thru the hole in the 1600 x-member. You could also unbolt the subi flange, put the diff in carefully so as not to get dirt in the exposed oil seal, then bolt the flange back on again once the diff is in. The nuts for the flanges are #%$#% tight though.... My original 1600 tailshaft flange wouldn't fit the subi diff (was smaller in the oil seal area), but the flange off a 180B SSS R160 would :?

The subi stub axles are held on with a "torx" bolt - a bolt with a six-sided star-shaped head. You can buy the correct sockets at decent tool places. I got the guy who sold me my R160 to undo the bolts before I bought it, so didn't need the special tool. Once the stub axles are off, just swap the Datsun equivalent, including the Datsun bolts, onto the diff.

Why do I know so much ? I spent the last two nights doing the swap

An R180 will bolt in, but apparently needs the matching R180 driveshafts as the dust covers over the side oil seals are different.

All 200B's I've seen with IRS have had R160's :?: . Most are live axle though.

An r180 out of a datto shouldn't require any mods i don't think. You'll just need the drieshafts too...

You can use the 1600 shafts or 180b shafts. As said before remove the dust covers on the shafts and the rest is bolt in.

Measure the top two bolts... for 160 it has a 160mm bolt spacing and r180, 180mm... theres a thread on here under the driveline section... not sure but i think its a sticky thread.

Will need to be a female E10 (E= external) torx socket sort of like this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-GREA ... enameZWDVW

Mines a deep style socket tho and 1/4 drive as there isnt much room around the bolt head for large socket heads. 3/8 drive and 'deep style' would be perfect if you can find one.
