Ill just keep it, not worth my time to pull it off and replace :)

Pulled the front cover back off today, changed the gasket over to the L18 instead of the L20 one. Also timing was out but about 5 degrees so ive fixed that. Put it all back together tomorrow and ill finish putting the damn thing together for the last time hopefully :D

Another hold up.

The rocker cover wont bolt on. Of the 6 holes one of them is threaded weird/resized. Too small :( like WTF!

Got lots done, re did my sump as i found out the one i just cleaned up wont fit the Stanza so ive cleaned up and painted the original one from the stanza.

Looks like a proper motor now, put the rocker cover and sump on. Ive found the L18 dipstick is hitting the sump without going all the way in so ill have to trim it a little. Fuel pump and oil pump on.

Whats left? Oil pressure sender, distributor, carbie and then trucking it where the Stanzas housed, clutch/flywheel on then gearbox and drop it all in.

ETA next fortnight. Fingers crossed

That engine looks pretty sweet! Nice work, especially with the painting. L4s I think are one of the nicest-looking motors, especially when they look nice and clean. Or painted.

Did you have th panel beat the sump at all, or were you fortunate to have a straight one?

Yeh it has come up well. Fortunately my sump hasnt copped any dings so just a quick sand, prep and spray on it.

Bob i just sealed the corner off with some RTV. if it weeps ill do something more permanent but I cant deal with another big holdup. :(

Put the distributor and carb on last night.

Im getting some free gauges off a mate who suffered from a major interior fire :( But hes offered me his old gauges for nix. The lenses on them are pretty shot but they still work as gauges so a bit of a rub back on the perspex or even just taking it off and theyll be fine.

Fairys nuts. I recon you should be pretty right, torque everything down and deal with the consequences if it weeps.

Everyone needs to experience the old 'dizzy-180-degrees-out' trick at least once. Teaches you practical limits on how high you can jump, and how high you can evacuate your bowels.

Good luck with the start up.
Just remember to crank it over with the plugs out until you get oil up.

BTW, there are differences in the coupe grill & the 78/79 Stanza.
Have both types.

Do not sell it.
Its more a 510 look than a 910 bluey.
Hated the square grille the first time I saw it.

Thanks again for the advice Baz  unfortunately treasury said no to perf 2000 clutch so I had to get the $100 stockie from the local :(

But have I been a busy boy today...

So so so so many lessons learnt the hard way and so much time wasted because of them... :x

1. Buy clutch alignment tool before attempting to fit clutch/flywheel
2. put gearbox in gear when trying to fit to motor
3. do not get fed up and decide to just put the motor in without the gearbox
4. Do not spend an hour trying to make the right side mount squash on, undo it and lower the engine next to the mount then bolt it back onto the motor...
5. Do not try and fit gearbox under car by yourself
6. do not try and pick up front end of car by motor attached to engine mounts (i was tired and cranky and put it down straight away)
7. always have a mate within 20 mins call away
8. fit rags over rocker cover to avoid scratching the sh*t OUT OF your nicely painted cover

:x :x :x

More stuff i prolly cant remember, anyways my goal of having everything bolted in and ready to start wiring up and plugging in hoses has been crushed. I hope to have that done by the end of TOMORROW now :(

At least the damn things in :D

I drove an L20B back to my house once in the boot of my 200B. It was great! Aside from the fact that I didn't know whether I would actually make it home, I rang my friend to inform him that I had eight cylinders in my Datsun! Then I got home, went to pick up a friend, made it to the end of my street and my clutch broke in two!

Bad luck with all of the motor business, I always need a friend to put a gearbox in for me, and I can never align the clutch by eye!
