I have done a search, but could not find what im looking for, i have a pair of 910 struts and are wanting to make them height adjustable for my 180B. What i wanna know is do i need to cut the strut tube down at all or just put the adjustable insert in?? Help would be much appreciated. Also what would be a good choice of shock insert? Cheers.

i am pretty sure that bluebird struts do not bolt onto 180b steering arms, they use offset steering arms, so they have a huge angle and will wear out your ball joint in a second

also, 180b and 910 have different ball joints, so you cant just swap over steering arms

i think you would be better off starting with 240k or even better, r31 struts, and going from there, depending what brake you wanna use, r31 good standard brakes...

Ahhh i have had these struts in my car before bolted up absolutely fine, just changed top hat, is a VERY common conversion here in NZ.

fair enough...i remember when i trialled some in my car, the ball joint angle was horrible
are the struts from a SSS or a coupe or something?? they may be different than the standard 4 door ones we get here..

The struts i got were out of a wagon, but i have never heard of anyone having problems with sedan ones.

gren its craig phillips here from nz.when i was doing a bit of reaserch for my 1600 race car i rung and spoke to a guy from suspension tech in dorkland and he is excellent. He sets up hundreds of race cars and knows what hes on about and he will talk on the phone for ages and is willing to help anyone.I used nissan 910 struts and brakes in my race car and they are pretty good, just put a decent set of pads in them and good fluid.Ring him and he will tell you how much to cut off and what inserts etc

why is it that your thinking you need to cut the strut down to make it height adjustable?

if your fitting shorter shocks then yes you need to cut the strut down, but if your just going for coilovers then no you dont NEED to

it would be a good idea however to cut the struts down and run shorter inserts if your running the car at a ride height less than what the struts were designed for....so you dont bottom out and what not

he could have been adjusting higher, and its a bit confusing when talking about adjustable height and then asking questions about adjustable inserts(assuming you are infact meaning the shock)

and without saying what adjustable shock he is using how is someone going to be able to say how much shorter the strut needs to be, r31 or 240z shocks would be nice and short though

but what should be done, take standard bluebird shock out, put shock one in, measure how far down from the top of the strut the top of the shock body is....then shorten the strut that much

I dont know what shock insert ill be using would be good to get peoples suggestion on that. Alright ill try an explain myself better, what i mean when i say adjustable insert i mean the part that gets welded to the strut tube that has the thread and the nut to adjust the height of the spring. I will be completing my struts quite soon and just wanted to know if this had been done before on a 180B so i didnt have to mess around with it alot. Thanks.

Use Oz spec R31 struts or shorten the 910 struts to same length.
Use r31 or Z31 inserts.

Baz, are z31 inserts directly compatible with R31 struts?

I might just go and buy a set and test out, but I've seen some cheap adjustable shocks made for Z31's available (and dave also pointed it out).
