Hey all this is my daily driver.

I brought the car about 2 years ago now. It had just been resprayed in the original Antarctic white, and had the original hubcaps, stripes and also had a venetian blind fitted for that old-school look. The engine bay hadn't been painted. So last Christmas i had holidays, I pulled the motor and got stuck into rubbing back the engine bay. All was going good until i found rust in the drain part of the firewall, so i brought myself a MiG and set out to attempt my first proper rust repair. While i was in that region and keen i removed the battery tray filled up all unnecessary holes and smoothed out all spot welds and strut tower seams.
After all the prep work was done and my arms ready to fall off from sanding i gave it a spray job.
All this is being done in a single garage to.
Will get more pics and info up later.

While the motor was out it got given a freshen up, its an L18 backed by a fairly quiet stanza 5 speed.
I striped the motor and sent the head away to get serviced, while waiting for the head to come back i gave the block a good hone, cleaned everything up, and reassembled the bottom end with new rings, bearings, and gave everything a new paint job.
When i got the head back it turned out the guy had given it a bit of a port job (nothing to extreme) but you could see the difference, so then i got stuck into the inlet manifold (standard for now) with my die grinder to match port it and i also opened it up a fair bit around were the carby bolts on, the extractors got given a mach port as well (it all helps).
Reassembled it with a new timing chain kit, water pump, oil pressure switch, leads, dizzy cap, plugs, clutch etc...
While the gearbox was out i also cleaned it up chucked in a new extension housing seal, and fixed the worn out shifter bush.

Thanks guys,

The brakes were upgraded not long after buying the car.
I've used the good old 180b booster / 240k master cylinder setup and swapped the front struts for 200b items, because my car still runs the stock 13'' rims the 200b calipers fouled on the wheels so i ended up swapping the 200b hubs and calipers for stanza items (girlock).
After the engine bay was painted i ran all new brake lines, also replaced the rear shoes / cylinders and changed the front pads.
The brakes pull up the L series really well but i would definitely upgrade if doing any sort of efi / turbo conversion.

The diff also got replaced with an R180 from an auto c210 skyline.

As far as suspension goes, its in desperate need for some new shocks and some proper lowered springs, this is on the to do list among many other things......................

Here are some pics of the car as it is today.

Thanks mate,
The engine bay took me forever to do but I'm so happy with the results.
Yeah i had never actually seen a 510 with the twin side stripes until i looked at this one, I'm pretty sure it was a factory thing, or so i have been told.
I think it looks good cause its something different.

Nice work! I'm liking the way it still looks totally factory....and then it's low and has a lightly worked engine. I'm definately a fan. Going by your signature I'm guessing this is a daily?

One word; WOW

Your car is so damm clean.

Loving the engine bay, it has to be the cleanest bay with an L series by far.

I just wished I had the time and $$$ to pull my engine out and give the engine bay a nice tidy up.

I see you have hidden the wiring and other bits and pieces.

Great work and keep it up mate

Thanks for the replies guys:

Green 200b: Yeah it was a daily for ages but has just been more of a weekend car lately, i scored myself an excel so Ive been using that to run to and from work but that runs out of rego in a few weeks so the dato will be my daily again.

Ryanz18et: Yeah i wanted to get whitewalls when i first got new tyres fitted but didn't have the dollars at the time, so i painted the edge of the rim between the hubcap and the tyre white its not as good as the real thing but i think it looks alright.

SIX-TEN: Thanks heaps mate, yeah the engine bay felt like it took an eternity to do, Ive mounted most of the wiring down near the chassis rail, and mounted things like the coil and relays/thermo switch for the thermo fan on the radiator support.
I would still love to get a set of carbys (still undecided) and a mild cam.

So i got started on cleaning up the interior this week,
I've made some new door trims as the original ones were stuffed (I'm still undecided weather i like them or not). I pulled the dash apart to have a go at re trimming the dash pad as it was cracked and someone along the way had decided to mount a huge clock in the middle of it. Whilst the dash is apart I thought it would be a good idea to clean the 30+ years of dust that has gathered in all the nooks and crannies.

I will organise some new carpet and get the roof lining done eventually, but for now I'm just trying to tidy it up the best i can and then hopefully next year i will have some more time and money to get it done professionally.

My aim is to keep the interior simple but with some modern touches like: late model front seats (still undecided) / retractable seat belts in the front and actually put some seat belts in the rear, and definitely a smaller sports steering wheel as I'm sick of smashing my knee caps on the original bus steering wheel when i get in and out of it.

Don't go too small on the steering wheel, every time I drive green200B's datsun i wonder if I'll be able to get around corners due to his tiny sports steering wheel... I prefer the large ones, makes it much easier to park and take corners at speed.
