Hello everyone, this is my '72 1600. I got it for $1850, about 2 months ago. It has a SSS L16 motor with twin carbs, which is awaiting a new cylinder head, a fairly straight but rusted body, terrible wheel alignment and utterly worn suspension. However, it does have TRX Rims and a wooden steering wheel!

After the head's fixed, Im going to start on the rust repair and wheel alignment. All the rust repairs will be EXTREMELY low budget (YR12+Old Car+Part time job=veeeery little cash) I'm talking fiberglass and bog (except for the lower A pillars down in the wheel well, they'll be fresh metal). After the rust is banished, I plan to use POR 15 paint as a primer and undercoat, then just go over it with a few coats of clear gloss. (it'll stay the original white colour)

Good to see another Datto still being used as a daily driver. I spent more time in year 12 repairing my 200B than studying, so I wish you better luck than that! Just do everything slowly as you go and it will work out well, even if it just gets you to the end of year 12 before you then really get stuck into it. You sound like you're in the same situation that I was!

Where abouts are you located dude? If you're anywhere near Diamnod Creek/Greensborough then I think I saw this car cruising around with L plates on in at the end of last year.

Im over in hurstbridge, so yeah, it probably was that car. I bought it off a guy in greensborough.
Me and my little bro pulled off the right front guard yesterday. RUST GALORE!!!!!!! all along the top support and a bit where the sill joins the lower A pillar.

next the left front guard. Going on what can currently be seen, it looks like the worse side.........

after those rust repairs have been taken care of, ill start fiberglassing the guards and doors

hey everyone.. last night me an my brother pulled off the left hand side guard. The actual structural chassis looks to be slightly better than the other side. The panel's a fair bit worse but. The entire inner panel is basically screwed, and I found a fair sized hole semi-hidden by some dodgy bog repairs. So tonight I'll finish grinding off the rust, then I'll start working on procuring the steel I'll need, then I'll trace out some basic outlines for the new sectins of steel. Ugh... soooooooo much work to do. I just wanna drive the damn thing again :impatient: :impatient:

if you do it properly now, then you wont have to worry about it again for a long time

dont cut and corners with rust repairs, it might take longer to do it properly, but the effort is worthwhile

yeah, i guess... but I still don't have enough cash to weld in replacements for all the rusted areas. some will have to be fibreglassed. by the way, would anyone know what the inner panels on a 1600 front guard looks like? I need to replace mine and Ive no idea what the original looks like

thanks people

Datsun Rule #1

If you want to drive it, don't take it apart..............

what you can't see won't hurt, unless it falls off, which there is usually a high chance of, unless...... you take it apart.

Holy sh*t! You live about 100m from me :)

I live up Acacia Road, you live opposite where it comes out on Hurstbridge Arthurs Creek Road - I noticed the firetruck in your pic :)

I think I saw you pull in there a week or so ago.

Sweet!!!! are you the guy with the orange 180 b? if so, that car's nice as!! when I was waiting for the bus on the main street you pulled in an went to the bank, and launched it soo hard pulling out I reckon you nearly lifted a wheel! you'll have to come down some time, or I could come up an have a chat, what no. house are you?

btw, some more progress pics.

Me and my brother stripped the interior tonight, all seats, carpet and underlay. the floorpan looks to be in pretty good cond., theres no real rust holes there as far as i can see, though i found some holes around the rear 1/4. pretty much on the lip of the wheel well :(
