Nice work. One of the first things I did to my car was tie rod ends, ball joints, and new bushes. Made a difference.

How much lower does the car sit with the new springs in the front?

Yeah i'll get some photos during the week. Yesterday i cut a whole bunch of pipe and bends for the exhaust and mocked it up.

The front springs (i don't have any rears, i'm going to cut the rears) look like this (this is the car they were in before mine).

Some pics. I've done some minor assembly on the head. I've got to lap in the valves next then i can really start putting it together properly, springs, retainers, rockers etc
Got to get all new studs and nuts for the whole thing, stainless hardware as much as i can :).

I probably should've cleaned my SU's like you did before I put them on the car. It's kinda hard to do when they are on the car...

Yeah, they needed a good scrub too. I used a wire brush and a grease eater bath on them and it still took a while!

Did a stack of little things today, i'll do some more tomorrow :).
Amongst those little things was some work on the head.
I've got all new studs in it now, and i lapped the valves in today.
The valves are freshly cut, but you need to get some grinding paste on them and spin the valve in the seat to get them to seal perfectly.
So you get some grinding paste:

And a stick/sucker thingo
[ img ]
And you put some paste on the valve where it contacts the seat, and insert it and spin it with the stick.
[ img ]
End result is this. The valve on the left is lapped in, you can see the stripe of duller colour. That is the ground area. The right one is freshly cut, but not lapped in.
[ img ]
And stuck some valve stem seals on too. Easy :).

Thanks for taking all the pics. Looks like you are doing a very thorough job of it!

Trying to in the time available to me, and without spending too much.
I think i'm up to about $400 now for the head, stainless for the exhaust, extractors and so on. A bit more for the wheels too (which i'm polishing as we speak).
Trying to get the best result i can for essentially spare change haha.

Stripped the engine bay ready to wash. Then paint. Still got to get the wiper motor and brake booster out, then it's good to go!

Got dad to plasma cut me out some profiles for exhaust flanges out of 6mm plate. I drilled them and cut the centre hole in them then mocked one up on the extractors. Also cut off the old exhaust tap thingo that goes to the stock carby (useless with the SU's). I was going to mig it all up but dad wanted to practice with the TIG so he welded it up for me instead (except the old exhaust tap hole, did that with the oxy) :). I'll wirebrush the extractors, paint them again and then heat wrap them :). And of course use them to mock up the remaining parts of the exhaust.

yeah, my old exhaust thing just sits there now... I probably should get rid of it, or at least block it off.

Good luck with the SU's, they can be a little fiddly but they are well worth the effort IMHO

Got the exhaust all made up. Got to make mounts for it now (going to have stainless straps clamping around the tubing rather than welded on mounts). I bought a bunch of stainless and drop sawwed it all up and my dad tigged it together for me. I was going to get some stainless wire for the mig and do it myself but he wanted to practice with the tig and it'll be neater this way too :).

Also picked up an optional AM/FM radio for the car, so I won't just have AM now ;). Thanks Green200B!
[ img ]

Also a question, there is a metal line (appears to be a fuel tank breather, i've not looked it much really) that runs around to the carby on the 200B. With the SU's it's not needed, what do people usually do with this? Remove it and block it? Or does it still need to vent somewhere?

Glad to hear the radio arrived ok

With that metal line, I put a hose on joining the two outlets when I had my SUs fitted, which was fine, but I believe there is a pipe that goes from your PCV valve that is supposed to go on there. On mine there was, one day I got bored and fitted it, but yeah, I wouldn't stress about it too much.
