If you want to do it, you will need the setup from an MR30 Skyline (guess)which has a power assisted recirculating ball steering box, or go to a power assisted rack and pinion from, say, an R31 Skyline/Pintara.
I also suggest that power steering on a P510 is overkill, but conversion to rack and pinion is not at all unreasonable, my goal for my PL510
WHY beacause I want to

Hey Nissanman if you go ahead with anything could you let me know because it's something I'm seriously considering doing in the next twelve months. I'm gonna convert my 1600 to a 200B steering column so I can have a collapsable column and from that add a rack and pinion steering system. I'm only gonna use a rear mounted rack so I don't have to fool around with changing radius rods or other ridiculous crap.

The trick is finding a rack small enough in length to add to a 1600. I've looked a small nissan pulsars and the like and they all seem a bit long. My thought is to check out a nissan micra (small car) or ultimately find and measure a quick rack from an early model escort. I reckon this is gonna be the go as eskys are pretty similar in dimension to 1600.

Let me know of any progress or thoughts everyone has

The master plan is to transplant the entire front suspension, x-member and steering from a non Power Steer R31 Pintara/Skyline into a PL510 2 door 8)
I've done a bit of measuring and it is looking good.
The beauty of the side rods on the rack is that they a just a threaded rod which screws into the ball joints at the struts.
That means thay can be shortened if necessary to match the vehicle track requirements
I'm going to use a VG30 SOHC engine in the 2 door so sump issues are not of any concern
I'll cut and shut whatever to make it all fit.
I gather from your comments that you don't currently have a collapsible steering column.
If you fit the 200B unit, grab all the column switchgear for upgrading the 1600 wipers and headlights.
It is a fairly simple mod and looks great 8)
I have the wiring diag. and pics. of the finished column if you want to see it.
Email me for info. :!:

Cheers dude,

Someone from the mailing list already gave me pictures of the 200B conversion and a detailed document outlining the procedure. One question, when I do it I'll be sticking with the steering box setup for a little while and was wondering if the whole arrangement (200B) fits straight into the 1600 steering box? Or do I have to also transplant the 200B one?

Cheers

I understand that the 200B column will mate up to the splines on the 510 steering box OK
If you want a fresher 'box, check the mounting holes and lock-lock ratio and transplant the 200B box as well 8)
A more likely replacement is a 180B box.
What you need is a box in good condition and a '68 510 may be past it

I'll post 'em through but it will take a few days :( ,

I'm waiting on my computer to arrive where I'm living at the moment. I'm using the old boy's at the moment but when I get mine set up I'll send them through. :)
