I pulled a half shaft out and disassembled/degreased the CV joints, they have clear daylight around the ball bearings and visible wear on the cages. The new Lobro joint is much much tighter and will hopefully stay that way. Was talking to a mate at the VW nationals about them, he said the porsche 930 CV joints can be fitted with some machining but the standard replacement for fkd chinese CVs is to fit german ones. He also mentioned a few ~500hp VWs that are still running type2 CV joints...

TSR in the State are doing 930 shafts now too.

TSR stuff looks good, but they seem way too hard to contact. Besides if type2 gear is good enough for 500hp VWs its good enough for me. The chinese CVs lasted 2 years so german ones should last forever...

Next hillclimb will be 19 June. Hoping to have the datsun there but depends on money for fixing it lol
From now until spring the track will be too cold for good times, I'm expecting low entry numbers until it warms up, so a good chance to get practice in :)

so did you buy german CVs that were the exact same length as the WC ones and just bolt them in using the existing adapters?

I have bought one, haven't fitted it (no point til i have 2) but have compared it to a chinese one side-by-side and the dimensions are the same. Made by Lobro, part number 211501331B (part number sourced from Nik's Roulex units)

Nice, keep us posted with how they go, be interesting to see if they eliminate the slack that the WC's are known for.

They are a much tighter unit than the chinese ones, however the majority of movement (slack) in the ones i pulled off was between the splines of the axle and the CV, maybe because the splines in the CV are worn or maybe because the splines on the shaft aren't quite right. Only time will tell.

FWIW I emailed WC and got a reply saying 200 sets sold worldwide and never had a problem like this... I thought lots of people had these problems...?

Funny. I spoke to a local supplier and he said most of his customers who bought the chinese CV's wore them out and asked him for German ones!

new joints are good so far, a lot less play in the shafts.
