hey guys,

good chance my diff is stuffed, R180 LSD, its making a nasty whhirrring noise, almost louder than the engine, and my wheels are a bit clunky/notchy when you turn them by hand when the car is jacked up. I'm hoping to remove it from the car in the next week or so and take it somewhere to see whats wrong with it. (First I'm going to disconnect the driveshafts & tailshaft and turn the diff by hand to make sure it's actually the diff)

Are there any places/people in Melbourne that specialise in the ol' longnose diffs? I'd like to take it somewhere where they're familiar with them, and don't spend their days putting banana peels in taxi diffs

Any help is appreciated.

thanks,
Anthony :)

I had my r180 freshened up, new bearings, seals, backlash etc done about 10 months ago by 'Terry's diffs and gears'. He was one of the original owners of a big diff workshop out here in the north but has now gone out on his own and works from home. Good bloke, reasonably priced and easy to deal with. He gets quite a bit of work from the workshop i used to work at and we never had a problem with him. Worth a call at least.

Sounds like you might need a new set of spider gears. My suggestion would be to pull the back off the diff, and have a look inside. If there are teeth missing, you should buy another diff/insides, and get someone to replace it.
