I used 195/60/14s on my 1600 and they were good. Anything around the right diameter should be alright... wider tyres might make it steer by itself a little bit but not as much as the toe settings. Get the toe on all 4 wheels checked by an experienced wheel aligner. Maybe the rear is toed out too. Also make sure it's not bump steering.

its not so much the profile you need to worry about. Its more concerned with the fact that a larger rim usually has wider tires, and therefore a bigger offset to allow the fitment of the width. This pushes the track width further out at the front, because generally, to go wider, you need to go wider out towards the guards, not inwards. 195 x 60's will be fine. You could even go 65's for the height. But that doesn't matter so much. More the width.

Can anyone tell me whats the best sized 14" tyres to go on 1600? I'm thinking 195/60/14's just cause I like that tyre size but just wondering what would be the best to try and sort this steering problem out... 175/65's? 185/65's? Or does it not really mater?
Depends on how wide the rims are...

They are just cheap snowflakes, so i'm guessing 6 inches, but might end up using 200b steels instead.

OK folks... I put some 14x5.5 steels (175/65/14 tyres) on the 1600 tonight and it seems to have made a fairly big different. It is still noticeable though, so don't know what to try next, maybe some decent tyres and a wheel alignment. It seems what ever the problem is that it was multiplied by having the big rims on it. It is at least driveable now :)

Ratdat, just browsing this old thread and wondered if you found out what the real cause of the poor tracking problem was. I noted in your post you said the control arm bushes were about the only part you hadn't replaced.

I had a similar problem with a stock 1600 I was rebuilding, and worn out caster arm bushes were the problem. Replaced these and the car handled like a newie! This made me think it may have been your problem, or perhaps the rewelded caster arm braket was not positioned correctly?

What was your fix Ratdat?
