Road car - saved from the metal crusher - this car was driven to a metal recycler and the plates handed in. The recycler rang one of the datsun places to see if they wanted to save it. I took it down got a blueslip with some minor repairs and I now use it to drive to and from the station.

It is a relatively clean rust free 79 jap spec car, engine number L16 00941. Since then I have put some old 260Z 14" rims that had from when I used 14's on the rally car and replaced the front struts with my old rally ones. The carby is a down draft webber.

Needs to have motor looked at next, it has a head gasket leak which I expect is a corrosion issue.

This is the most rust I have found in the car.

Update on the Stanza, replaced the motor with an L18 unit that I was given. The L18 was supposed to be a datsport rally motor, but after looking at the unmolested ports on the head I think the only datsport bit was the inlet manifold (which) i didnt use.

The L18 was a pain to fit due to dipstick hole needing to be redrilled. The motor has some sort of CAM in it and with the single downdraft seems to rev pretty well even with standard ports. The down side to the "rally" motor, is when built the owner's budget didnt extend to lash pads to suit the CAM, so while the wipe is useable it is not ideal and hence noisy. It seems like the build of the motor was recent, so no leaks, oil consumption etc. I also fitted a bluebird radiator, which I was give at the same time as the motor. Dont know what the old radiator was, but it was non nissan and had both inlet and outlet on the drivers side. The bluebird unit is not a bad fit, fills the opening for air flow.

Other glitches, could not get the temp gauge to work, I have replaced instrument voltage regulator, the guage itself and the sender. I have 3 instrument clusters, one had (orig in car) had no regulator. One had a reg with some cracks, and the other looked ok. I expect that all the reg were rs, can they be bought new anyone know the specs. I have given up and installed a after market temp guage.

I can't believe that someone would have been happy to sell that for scrap. It looks straight-as! Get rid of some of that ride height and you will have a sweet daily.
